Could you please elaborate on how the groups will work, with examples?

I really like the ability to play 3rd game if you're 2-0 ^^

Let's call players A,B,C,D,E and F, in order of seed.

Round 5:
A-D (2-0)
B-C (2-1)

Round 6:
A-F (3-0)
B-E (1-2)

Round 6bis (using the unused deck from R5/R6):
D-F (2-1)
C-E (2-0) < here, C doesn't agree to the third match, so he's sure to pass the round, but in this way he loses out on the chance of having one extra point. This may cost him when he has to get 2 more points than A.

Table After this stage:

Group 1Group 2
A: 5B: 3
D: 2C: 3
F: 2E: 2

E and F proceed to be eliminated.

R7:
A-B
D-C

R8:
A-C
D-B

The person with the most points after these two rounds is the winner.

Spoiler for Old Draft:
[Name needed] - Rules
Original idea by: RavingRabbid   |   Developed by:    |   Art by:    |   Organized by:

Welcome to [Name needed]. There are people who fight for glory, people who fight because they are bored and people who aren't actually fighting. Can you be manage to be the last standing in the Trio League?

1. HOW TO SIGN UP?
Everybody can sign-up, as long as they have a Forum account and an Elements The Game account, just post in thread.

We can accept up to 36 competitors, here. In your sign-up post you have to add 8 triples of elements, so that every element appears 2 times. These will be the elements you will use to build trios in your battles, 1 per round.
R1:  :aether :air :darkness <---- This is good. Three different elements
R2:  :fire :fire :entropy <---- This is no good. The three elements are not different.
R3:  :aether :air :darkness <---- Well... if you like building  :aether :air :darkness trios there's nothing wrong, but you're not forced to put the same elements together twice
R4:  :earth :entropy :water <---- Still good
R5:  :life :light :death <---- Good
R6:  :earth :gravity  :underworld <---- Underworld and Rainbow are not elements
R7:  :time  :water  :death <---- Good
R8:  :life :light :death <---- This is the third time death appears. Not good

Time, Entropy and Gravity appear only once, you need to put them one more time.
Obviously, this is an example, but it contains every error one could do while making its sign-up post.
A perfectly legal sign-up post is needed to participate in [Name Needed]

2. THE FIRST ELIMINATION
You're going to be randomly paired with 8 opponents. The "Round" you face your opponent is very important, because it determines the elements you will use to face each other.
All the 8 rounds are out at the same time, and you don't have to play them in order. But round 8 is round 8, even if it is the first battle you play.

3. THE FIRST BATTLES!
Build decks of any size, but it must respond to the following rules:
- You must use only and all the elements you have selected for the round in which you face this opponent.
- Every elements must have a minimum total cost of 12.
- There must be at least 5 cards per element.
- The total cost of other cards can be maximum 3, minimum 0.

4. PLAYING THE DUELS!
- You must play 5 duels with every opponent, even if you're winning 3-0. Who wins 3 or more duels wins the match.
- You may change deck between duels, unless there is a desync/timeout. A desync/timeout is a replay, unless one of the two was CLEARLY (and I mean it, CLEARLY) going to win.
- Remember, a match is valid only when you completed all 5 the matches. If you want to have more chances to pass, you better play and win even if you already lost the match.

It's a good idea to either record the matches, or take screenshots as proof, in case something weird, like a desync error, happens. Remember, a player who gets caught cheating, will be permanently banned from all Elements community PvP events, so please play fair.

5. ADVANCING

The best 9 players will pass, based on a special score.

The score depends on:
S: Score
W: Matches Won
D(i): Duels won against player i (if you won the match)
W(i): Matches won by player i

S = W + {D(i)*W(i)/8} for every player you won the match against.

6. THE FINALS
The 9 finalists post a list of 8 triplets of elements (like you did in the sign-up topic, same rules), in the finals topic. Then, the brackets are made.
Since every player will get a bye once, every player should consider every round AFTER the round it got a bye in like it was the round before.

Bill posts
R1:  :aether :air :darkness
R2:  :death :earth :entropy
R3:  :fire :gravity :life
R4:  :light :time :water
R5:  :aether :air :darkness
R6:  :death :earth :entropy
R7:  :fire :gravity :life
R8:  :light :time :water

He faces PlayerA in Round1, PlayerB in Round2, PlayerAB in Round3 and gets a bye Round 4. That means that his Round 5 battle against PlayerOAb with his Round 4 elements.
The duels and deckbuilding happen in the same way as the eliminatory round, except that you can stop when someone won its third duel. You also get to use 3 upgrades per element.
The winner of the finals is who won most matches.
If there is a tie for the winner, the winner will be who won more direct matches. In case there is still a tie after this, a small tourney following the duels/deckbuilding rules of the finals.
[/right]

7. REWARDS
The winner of the event will receive this amazing forum award icon: (not seriously, it's just a placeholder.
Spoiler for 2nd old draft, more similar to the current one:
Trio Test Trip - Rules

Welcome to Trio Test Trip. People may fight for glory, may fight out of boredom or may not actually fight. Shame on you not fighting people. You should be playing trios. Can you be manage to be the last standing?

1. HOW TO SIGN UP?
Everybody can sign up, as long as they have a Forum account and an Elements The Game account, just post in the sign up thread.
After your sign-up post you have to send 8 triplets of elements via PM to the organizer.
Triplets must be built so that every element appears at least 2 and no more than 2 times. These will be the elements you will use to build trios in each of your battles, 1 per round. The order is very important. Here's an example of a WRONG triplet list, with the reasons each line is good/not good. It contains one of each possible error.

R1:  :aether :air :darkness <---- This is good. Three different elements
R2:  :fire :fire :entropy <---- This is no good. The three elements are not different.
R3:  :aether :air :darkness <---- Well... if you like building  :aether :air :darkness trios there's nothing wrong, but you're not forced to put the same elements together twice.
R4:  :earth :entropy :water <---- Still good
R5:  :life :light :death <---- Good
R6:  :earth :gravity  :underworld <---- Underworld and Rainbow are not elements
R7:  :time  :water  :death <---- Good
R8:  :life :light :death <---- This is the third time death appears. Not good

2. THE FIRST ELIMINATION
You're going to be pitted against 4 opponents. If the number of players permits that, 5 players will be facing each other and only each other.
All the 4 rounds will be posted at the same time, and it isn't necessary to play them in order. But round 4 is round 4, even if it is the first match you play.

4. PLAYING THE MATCHES!
- Each match is best of 3, which means the winner will be the first to win 2 single duels.
- You may change deck between duels.
- Standard Desync Rules apply [insert link to standard desync rules here]
- It isn't necessary to play 3 matches if someone has already won 2-0. If both players agree to, they can play the last match, and the result WILL change the scoring.

It's a good idea to take screenshots as proof in case something like a desync error or a timeout happens. Remember, a player who gets caught cheating, will be permanently banned from all Elements community PvP events, so please play fair.

5. ADVANCING

The best 6 players will advance, based on the numbers of single duels won,
They will then be seeded in two groups.
Group 1Group 2
Seed 1Seed 2
Seed 4Seed 3
Seed 6Seed 5

6. THE GROUPS AND THE FINALS
Order is still important. In case of a tie, the best seed will advance. After every match in the group, the bottom player in each group will be eliminated, and the players will proceed to face the two top seeds in the other group, using their R5/R6 triplets for the first part of the group stage and the R7/R8 triplets for the second part. The player with the highest score (seed acts as a tiebreaker) will be crowned winner of the event.

7. REWARDS
The winner of the event will receive this amazing forum award icon:
Modified a couple things. Players now face less players in the first round, deckbuiling rules are more flexible and more people advance to the final group. Also slightly modified and made scoring more clear. Removed the option for the 3rd duel after a 2-0 to happen. Cleared out some tiebreakers rules too.

The only thing I would suggest is a better way to rank the players. If you have a situation where five players are tied for the #8 spot with a 4-4 record, playing a series of Bo3 duels among them would be very inconvenient. How about using KRACH rating? It's great for when there is a small number of games, and it's almost impossible for player's ratings to be tied.

I don't really know how to use KRACH rating, but I can look it up definitely. Are you suggesting to use it as a tiebreaker for 3+ player ties or even in a 2 player tie situation?

I can take care of making KRACH ratings. I already have a program that I used for Trenzalore. Basically the purpose of KRACH is to adequately weigh strength of schedule, which is especially important if there are only 3 matches. I think it would be desirable to use it even for a 2 player tie. A tiebreaker duel could potentially delay the event by a week if the players are not in similar time zones, which would probably not be worth it.

Edited to use Krach Ratings for tiebreakers. Does Krach work better if players who face each other play similar players or if players who face each other face completely random opponents?

I think it's better if the opponents are random. What you wouldn't want to do is put players in groups of 4 and have them play round-robin. In that scenario, KRACH would hardly have any meaning.

My opinion (as usual) leans towards playing out tiebreaks when possible, unless the clock for an event is very tight, I'd rather see players advance or not based on things other than strength of schedule.

My opinion (as usual) leans towards playing out tiebreaks when possible, unless the clock for an event is very tight, I'd rather see players advance or not based on things other than strength of schedule.
The biggest problem I have with tiebreakers being played out here is that it forces to move away from the fixed triplet scheme, which is mostly the theme of the event.
