Elements World Cup - Rules
Original idea by: Atom_heart   |   Developed by: Atom_heart   |      |

Players from all around the world compete to bring the Elemental Cup home... until the next edition! Play your way through the national qualifiers to win the chance to represent your country at the finals!

All national teams compete in a single bracket at the finals. Each team can have up to 3 members. If more than 3 representatives sign up for the same country, a round robin national qualifier is played. The top 3 players become the national team and advance to the World Cup finals.

1. HOW TO SIGN UP?
Anyone with a forum and a chat account can sign up for this event. Start by reading the rules very carefully. Then sign up by posting on a separate sign up topic, stating nationality matching the country of your profile (though it wouldn't fit the event theme, an extra 'country' could be included for people who prefer to keep their nationality undisclosed). If you cannot find a sign up topic, or if it is locked, this event is not currently active, and you will have to wait for it to restart.

No limit to the amount of countries in the finals. Each national team has a maximum of 3 members.

2. GETTING READY
Build decks of any size (from 30 to 60 cards).
- No upgraded cards
- No shards
(this are tentative rules, feedback is welcome)

3. BRACKETS

Qualifiers
Once the sign up phase is over, countries with more than 3 representatives play the national qualifiers. The top 3 players become the National team and go on to play the finals. Players are distributed in groups no larger than 4 (except if the total of players is 5).
These are some examples of qualifier structure:
- 3 players or fewer automatically become the national team.
- 4 players compete in a one way round robin, facing each other once. If the bottom 2 are tied, the result of the match between them is taken into account to determine 3rd place.
- 5 players form a single round robin group (only in this case).
- 6 players form two groups of 3, and the top 2 from each group play a final bracket. In case of triple tie in a group, number of lost games come into consideration. If still tied, an extra match is played.
- If 3 groups are formed, the bracket is played by the top player of each and the best second (the one with fewer lost games; if still tied, an extra match is played).
- Larger qualifiers follow the preceding criteria.

World Cup Finals
All national teams are placed in a bracket. Once the bracket is revealed, each team member fights one of the other team members (these matches are determined randomly). The number of matches depends on the size of each team:
- 3 vs 3: 3 matches
- 3 vs 2: 3 matches. One player fights 2 different opponents
- 2 vs 2: 2 matches. If tied, a 3rd match between the winners is played
- 2 vs 1: 2 matches. If tied, the single player fights a random opponent
- 1 vs 1: 1 match

The team with most matches won advances to the next stage.
A 3rd place match is played between the semifinals losing teams.

4. DUELS
Players have 1 week to make the fight happen. They must contact their opponent using a PM, and try to find a time that suits both. If the fight doesn't happen, both players lose by default, unless one player is clearly more active in trying to find a suitable time. Event organizer will determine who the most active player was, and his or her word is final.
Qualifiers should last aproximately 6 weeks. The lenght of the finals will be determined by the size of the bracket.

Matches are best-of-three in every stage.

Deck and mark changes are allowed as long as the rules are met.

It's a good idea to either record the matches, or take screenshots as proof, in case something weird, like a desync error, happens. Remember, a player who gets caught cheating, will be permanently banned from all Elements community PvP events, so please play fair.

5. AFTER DUELS
Winner should post a new topic in the "Battle Results" section, along with short description of how the match went.

6. WINNER
All members of the team winning the final match will be recoginzed as World Cup winners. The country of the winning team will be considered the World Champion. The world title will be held for a year, when the next World Cup is played. If the tournament is not repeated by then, the title will be vacant until the next competition is held.

7. REWARDS
All members or the winning team will recieve a forum award icon.
The name of the country currently holding the title could be displayed somewhere at the forum Home.
If possible, a World Cup icon could displayed next to the profile flag of the champion country (for all members using it).

Final note
As you can see, this idea doesn't bring a new and creative mechanic, or a clever set of special rules. It could be considered a pretty straightforward tournament. Having said that, I think its value resides in being a fun and exciting way to celebrate and honor the multicultural nature of the forum and the game. Besides that, given its relatively simple requirements and generous time windows, it can be played by a large number of players, and at the same time get really competitive as the stages go on.
Sadly, as much as I'd like to get more involved in forum activities, I have very little time to dedicate to it. If this idea catches on, I'd need a big hand from more experienced and available event organizators.
Of course, this idea is completely open to suggestions, this is just a stub. I'd like to thank you for your time. I hope this takes off and, most important of all, provides hours of entertainment to the community.

Just to clarify, I'm pretty sure this is just an event idea, not an actual sign up thread?

Anyway, seems like a good idea. But (correct me if i'm wrong) I'm fairly certain that most players will be concentrated in a small number of countries. Really, I'd see the following happening (based on multilingual section)

1. Americans, a large part of the elements population, fight forever to determine their top 3. Event delayed by weeks.
2. Italy = See above
3. Greece = Vagman, Annamall, Arthanasios, Ilias22 have a quick skirmish to determine who doesn't get to sign up.
4. Netherlands = Nilsieboy, ToRB, aand...Jappert?
5. Germany = Odii Odsen, and...uhm...idk.
6. Every other country struggles to field a full team.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though, which I'm certain I am. I don't know much about everyone else's nationalities.

Agree with Murica, maybe different parts of america, like east coast, center, west? Also, France would have a pretty good/full team iirc.

just let us see... and you know what, if we make the biggest parts of community/world more worth, you can skip that whole event... there is no need for such a thing like make more parts of 1 country to give more people an option to fight... cause you got those qualifiers to qualify for your team! the best of the best! and thats how it works, in each world cup tournament in the world.

MURICA! So basically an open meta without shards?
for now :D

Lol, hold your horses cowboy! So far, this is just an idea. I'm happy to see the enthusiasm though!

1. Americans, a large part of the elements population, fight forever to determine their top 3. Event delayed by weeks.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though, which I'm certain I am. I don't know much about everyone else's nationalities.

Well, the american qualifiers could be a bit crowded. I don't know if there's a way to count american members, but let's do some rough numbers.
There are about 3000 forum members. Let's say that 1/3 are americans (1024 to make the math simple). Let's assume that all of them are currently active, that they all have more than 30 posts, and that they all want to participate (which would be awesome, by the way). You arrange them in groups of 4, and you have 256 groups. After the 3 weeks of round robin you get your 256 group winners, and you arrange them in a (very large) single bracket. After 8 stages (weeks) you get your National Team. That's 11 weeks, almost 3 months. It's long, but not eternal. It would require some heavy organization, though.

6. Every other country struggles to field a full team.
You don't really need a full team to compete. Check section 3. We wouldn't want to exclude that one guy with the Antarctica flag, right? :)

Thank you all for your thoughts!

Germany: 10 men, Spielkind, sinyor, taker, maybe teffy?

Ppl from france like Jenkar, inthisroom, maybe ralouf.
I think Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China and Vietnam would be also have strong teams.

Sounds very interesting, deck building rules might be reviewed a bit I think, I'm not a fan of an all-open meta, but otherwise this seems quite appealing, I'd definitely go for it.
