What is your opinion about Wikileaks? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=21592.msg276387#msg276387

Personally, I think that Wikileaks has done an enormous amount of good in this world. Here is a sampling of some stories broken by Wikileaks. (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/24/wikileaks/index.html) Does anyone really think that these things should've been kept secret from the public?

I know a lot of people think foreign policy is a secondary or tertiary concern, well behind the economy in importance, but when you consider that we spend trillions of dollars on foreign wars, you realize that it has a big effect at home.

Remember, this is not about Julian Assange. I don't know if he did what he's accused of, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had.

I think Wikileaks is good. Lots of stuff is covered up not because it keeps people safe but because one or two men make a mistake and cover it up. People have a right to know what their government is doing most of the time.
Edit
I just wish wikileaks made sure certain war docs were censored a little more, and that they did more things to private sector businesses that are corrupt.

The next big leak is supposed to be about Bank of America. There's an interesting story related to this upcoming leak. (http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/201106/6798/Data-intelligence-firms-proposed-a-systematic-attack-against-WikiLeaks) I found this to be quite amusing.

government should have more transparency. I see nothing wrong with wikileaks except for the ones that put troops in harms way by revealing locations or other sensitive info. Reveal stuff like that after they have left. We dont need to know where they are, but where theyve been would be fine

Washington (CNN) -- The online leak of thousands of secret military documents from the war in Afghanistan by the website WikiLeaks did not disclose any sensitive intelligence sources or methods, the Department of Defense concluded. Sorry BluePriest, but you're a victim of propaganda. (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/10/17/wikileaks)

Wikileaks is a patsy, being used by the government to leak the information it wants to be leaked and start problems.  i.e. it's believed the problems in tunisia started due to wikileaked documents.  Also if you believe a private in the military got above confidential access to leak the documents to wikileaks then I have a bridge in san francisco to sell you.  Private Manning is just a pawn.  Yes government disclosure is good, but only if it is real disclosure.  Not just the government playing political chess with their released information.

some items should be released and some should not. Diplomatic talk should be released to see whose grave we're diggin. Talk About TAXES should always be released however talk about secret plans being released is kinda like giving terrorists explosives

Explain to me how it's in the US government's interests for Arab dictators that we've propped up for decades to be overthrown. You have no evidence for this theory and it doesn't even make sense.

Manning, a pawn? Then why are they doing this (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/03/05/manning) to him? Shouldn't he get some kind of reward?

What kind of government disclosures could there possibly be for you to call them "real"? See this list. (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/24/wikileaks)  Since then, there have been many more very serious disclosures as well. What's not real about any of that?

If you can give me one example of a wikileaks disclosure that has actually caused any real harm (ie: physical injury, death, property damage, etc.), then I will think more highly of your comment than I do now, because I am not aware of one. I am aware of a lot of talk about "blood on their hands," but nothing more than typical government spin.

Also, it's important to keep in mind that for their latest disclosures, they have decided to share their information with various newspapers so that they will have some help in deciding which documents to release. With very few exceptions, almost everything released so far from this last leak has actually been published by a newspaper. So any criticisms about dangerous information being leaked should be directed at those newspapers just as much as they should be directed at wikileaks.

Good.  My one hesitation to Very Good is this:  It allowed me, an American teenager to have access to information regarding the status of America's nuclear weapons based in Incirlik Airbase in Turkey for Policy Debate.  I shouldn't really be able to know about that.  Public welfare issues are fine to leak, but not intel about nuclear weapons.

That was already public, (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/h.php?news=incirlik-becomes-major-host-for-american-nuclear-weapons-2008-06-30) at least as of 2008.
