So I was thinking the other day...

What if the government had an official forum, like this one?

I mean, why don't they?

Can someone tell me why this would be a bad idea? I feel like there's no reason not to, and there's plenty of plus sides so long as the mods know what they are doing.

I have seen the Reddit Politics forum. That does not give me hope.
I understand the twisted incentives that guide politicians. That does not give me hope.
I believe that a Government official forum would cost more than the Reddit Political forum and be paid for through taxation even from those that do not support the expenditure. That does not give me hope.

Compared to other online communication forms, forums tend to bring out the worst in people, especially when discussing politics and other controversial topics. Otherwise reasonable people can become screaming banshees.

You can contact your elected representatives by email, though of course their staff will handle it. Whatever opinion you express will be tallied with similar opinions on the subject. However, I have heard that mailed letters carry more weight in the tally because there is the additional cost of postage, which requires some extra dedication (i.e., a sign that you might do something about your opinion, such as change your vote, participate in a mass protest, give a campaign contribution, etc.).

The government wouldn't have a forum like this because the governments plans aren't something they want shown to people, plus the internet isn't exactly secure now is it. The government would prefer meetings etc than posting on a forum as a meeting is instant a forum has to wait for it to refresh. I really can't see the government sitting infront of a computer on a forum talking about all they are planning where others can sign up, hack etc. The only bad things apart from that are the points people are taught in IT lessons (first lesson as well) that the internet is not secure nor safe and you don't share anything personal online, I kinda see the government stuff as personal and in need for something a bit more secure.

It's ironic that the words "public" and "private" seem to have been reversed. Now, what the government does is private and personal, but we have to sacrifice our privacy in the name of security. Information is power, and we're becoming increasingly powerless.

the first con i saw in this was that other countries can get in it too. this means that the opinions of people who want america to fall will essentially get a vote in how it runs. at first, this sounds good, but it isnt. people are ignorant, people are narrow minded, and people tend to be stubborn to the bitter end. now, does it sound like a good idea?
