The meaning of life is to give life meaning.

Meaning is a subjective mental construct created by sentient being. We are sentient so we can create the meaning of life witch fits us the best.
1) The meaning of life and the meaning given to life by John mean two different things.
2) Your first statement does not follow from your second. A mutually exclusive alternative to the first statement "is to not give life meaning" is also compatible with your second statement.

1) That is the point. The idea of an universal meaning of life is absurd.
2) Formally that is correct, but if a person decides to not give life any meaning, it is fine.
