What is a soul? What is required of a being for it to have a soul? Also, if you die, what happens to your soul?

And also, if you manage to somehow replace each lobe of your brain with a microchip that perfectly simulates the replaced lobe, (you can live without some lobes, see Phineas Gage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage)) are you still alive, and do you (or it) still have a soul?

In what way do you mean this? I see myself as a normal (who doesn't see themself as normal? ) person. How would who I am affect a soul? Maybe because religions define souls differently? I'm agnostic.

The soul is an outdated concept rooted in a dualistic understanding of human beings (i.e., a spiritual "ghost" occupying and controlling a physical "machine"). Doesn't the Ego also keep those mechanisms in control too?

But neither is the soul.

my point is that "the soul does not exist because the nervous system explains everything" is a valid argument, saying "the soul does not exist because the ego is what keeps mechanisms in check" is not.

I was told by a good friend the Soul is just one of our 3 parts. Body Soul Spirit. His theory was we are like a tape recorder. the Soul records on to the Spirit or vice-versa I'm not sure which. and the Body of course is the housing.

I don't how many religions believe in the 3 parts. Animals I have been told do not have a soul.
