I am new to Smash Bros and am looking for a starter main. I like being far from my opponents, so I prefer ranged combat. I prefer damage over move speed, but I would not give up jumping height. I would also like a method to escape close combat situations. Which character would suit me best?

I am also inexperienced with Switch controls, so I would prefer a character with combos and controls that are not difficult to learn.

Samus. I LOVE samus. Majority of moves are ranged, super easy to get the hang of, and can turn into a ball to escape close combat. She's pretty much exactly what you are looking for

Dark Samus is slightly better, since her roll (dodging to the left or right while on the ground) is 3 frames shorter than Samus's. It's Phazon Charge Shot is also at a slightly lower angle than Samus's, so it can hit smaller characters easier.

Lucina/Marth and Richter/Simon are often good picks for new players from what I've heard. Lucina (and Marth, but Lucina is slightly more consistent) has her down special, which is good for escaping when used well, but is fairly short range since she's a sword character with no projectiles. But her range with the sword is quite nice.
Richter (and Simon, but Richter is more consistent in the same way that differs Marth and Lucina) is slower, and has worse recovery, but has really nice ranged play with a ton of projectiles and a long range whip.
Both of these characters are much easier to pick up and play than a lot of the roster too, which is nice for someone new to the game

Correct me if they changed something in the patch but the only difference that matters between Simon and Richter is their holy water. Simon's has flame properties and Richter's has aura properties. I don't know what aura properties do if they do anything.

Oh my bad, I thought I heard somewhere that Simon had sweet spots at the tip of his whip, but a bit of research and I can't find mention of that. Carry on

The two characters that best fit this description are Samus and Link. Link has much more spammable projectiles which make it easier to focus on fighting at range. He also kills earlier, but his escape options aren't as good as Samus's. For a full breakdown of the differences between Samus and Dark Samus, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDyA2U4lgDA

In Smash you'll find zoning characters and aggro characters. There's no character that can rely too much on "ranged combat", but there's many that use it in order to connect melee attacks without risking their own hide, i.e. hitting someone who is already flying away from a ranged attack, and for starting true combos (inescapable).

The only competitive mention so far has been Simon/Richter. For something more balanced out and even more competitive, see Palutena (probably the best performing zoner so far). For something fun and less competitive, see Zelda. For a more melee-focused zoner that is very viable, see Young Link. For the only character who relies on laying traps, see Snake. He's pretty strong and has very unique gameplay.

Other less viable options that still aren't too weak are R.O.B. (bleh) and Mewtwo (hella fun and floaty air combos). The easiest to pick up are Zelda and Mewtwo, in that order. Both are a good introduction to the zoning playstyle.

The first Smash Ultimate Summit has started. It's a 16-man tournament with a combination of invitees, high placers in tournaments, and people voted in. It runs over three days and has a lot of fun side events too. At the time of this posting they're playing Random v Random.
