You keep items, not XP. It was done because of server lag killing people over void in The End which is far more unfair. The setting can be applied individually, and I am happy to turn it off for you. Unfair lag death is not increasing the difficulty, it's a bug.

Also, I talked with Linkcat and he made a smart suggestion. Now keepitems (and still no keepXP) only works in The End.

This is for fighting one or more Withers in the open somewhere in the overworld.

Remember, keep items is now off in the overworld, so prepare accordingly. Keep items (and not keep xp) is only on in The End solely to help with server lag halting Elytra momentum over the void preventing recovery of items. You will always lose xp due to a death, and a death counter is now the score in the scoreboard.
