the wording on the card says "reduce damage by"
other cards say "reduce physical damage by"

does this mean that spell damage is also reduced?

Nope. Spell damage cannot be reduced by a shield, but only reflected by some shields (Reflective shield and Emerald shield).

It's pretty awesome, but the unupgraded version HAS to be a bit more expensive, like 2 quanta? I mean, it's completely splashable, and blocks 1 damage like some other cards, but doesn't have a secondary effect, so it should be just 1-2 quanta lower than those shields. Otherwise, it's awesome.

The space a card occupies is a cost in itself. No need.
My 3 game-modification principles:
1. If it ain't broke, don't wreck it.
2. Simple fixes for simple problems.
3. Remember to fill in the holes.

Besides, the fact that the card occupies the shield slot is also a cost. Equipping more than one shield would be horrible. ( + would be overpowered.)
