Elite and the (shoddy) sequels took many years of (off?) my life.  I love Civ and all the spin-offs (alpha centauri etc) those also had me glued to the keyboard.

Recently, Fallout 3 and Borderlands are the ones for me.  Both I played beginning to end pretty much non-stop about 2 and half times (once through, through again with different character build and then again with another build that I get bored with).

The all time hat's-off award goes to a D&D campaign I played in for YEARS.  All the original Gygax modules (tweaked for players who'd done them before), including 'The Temple of Elemental Evil', another game I've rinsed out totally, all the way from copper-hoarding lowbies to kicking Vecna's (and Iuz') ass.  As I said, years of hilarity, action, drama, tragedy and beers with yer mates, awesome.

I still am an active player of Advanced Squad Leader, a tactical WWII board game. A typical game can take 6-8 hours, or more.
Is that an Avalon Hill 'bookcase' game?  I have Panzer Leader and Squad Leader, just wondering if they're the same series.

[Edit]  Forgot Diablo ][  :-[  <facepalm>

my favourite game would be baldur's gate series and another game that probably could come close to it is the witcher.

most time wasted for me probably Diablo II and Red alert II - i'm not sure why i was addicted to those games 10+ years ago.

the earliest favourite that i could remember (during DOS) probably GODS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gods_%28video_game%29) and the Quest for Glory series  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quest_for_Glory) :D

and yes, those games are ancient!  :))

It is a continuation of Squad Leader. AH came out with 3 new modules for SL, adding new nationalities, and rules, but it was a bit chaotic, trying to find a particular rule. ASL cleaned up the system, and expanded on it. There are modules now for every nationality that fought in WWII, and hundreds of scenarios available. And the game is still available, even though AH was bought out by Hasbro.

Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.

DF is, as somebody on the Bay 12 forums put it "like your geology 101 class was taught by Tolkein, but you were drunk and playing Sims and Dungeon Keeper, then looking at ASCII art, and this is what was in your dreams."

Thanks for the info tallguy2241, didn't know the game was still going strong and being expanded upon, I'll have to keep an eye out.  I found SL and PL in a clearance pile in a local game shop and didn't realise they had continued to be developed.

If you want to get back into it easy, look for "ASL Starter Kit" .Runs for around $35 or so. If not available in a local store, go to the publisher's website (www.multimanpublishing.com).

There should be a sizable following of ASL players in the UK.

Most may not know it, but it's S4 League for me - even though I am not spending a lot of time on it, it's still my favourite one. It's just got that feeling.
