What's worse? Thread Necromancy or Thread Duplication? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=21516.msg275245#msg275245

Pretty simple question.

If I had the choice between making a topic that already exists or posting in a topic that's over a month old, what should I do?

revive old.  Just my opinion.  Idea is that we can learn from the past questions and answers, so as not to repeat.

Thread necromancy is definately prefered...no reason for two of the same things to be posted.  I necro threads from time to time if they are still valid.

In the Card Ideas and Art section I would prefer Thread Necromancy. (previous comments are useful for balancing) However all intentional Thread Necromancy should indicate in some manner that they knew it was a dead thread previously.

I prefer duplication(except in the card art and ideas section) but only if it helps promote new content, and possibly linking to the old thread.

Definitely necromancy. It respects the thread creator and doesn't create more unnecessary threads.

I don't mind necroing threads in the least bit from time to time, though I do respect that people try to present new ideas and front page space is invaluable as most know.

Some threads however do deserve more time in the spotlight and unfortunately it could just be due to the luck of the day that it got buried.

EDIT: Keep in mind that you are voting for what is worse, not what you would do.

This totally threw me off. My error was promptly fixed however. Don't make the same mistake I did.

I prefer duplication if the original topic is something that needs constant updates and the original poster is not around often enough to update it. Otherwise I would revive the old thread.

My philosophy on thread necromancy is that it is acceptable when you have something productive and/or relevant to add. If you don't, then you shouldn't be posting at all, let alone making a new thread.

I've noticed that ever since this thread started there has been a rather large increase of necro posts on the forums.  Now I agree, necro posting is usually less, hmm, annoying than duplicate threads being produced, but it does not justify reviving a dead thread when the discussion has died long ago just because it is the lesser of two evils (especially considering most of these completely ignore the GIANT red warning that appears when you try to post).  If you need something to increase your post count, then find something constructive to add, don't just find a random thread to post in.  Bottomline:  Regardless of which one of these is better than the other, if there's no reason to do either; don't do it.
