I have a love-hate relationship with this old SNES game. It's kind of fun at first, but then I remember how much of a boring grind it is, plus the linear, cliché story, plus the absurdly buggy gameplay... and above ALL, the annoyance of having two dead-weight AI-controlled characters who not only get themselves killed repeatedly, they also keep you from moving forward because they get hung up on all kinds of terrain features and you can't travel beyond a fixed distance from them. Also, there's the fact that you can get hit while you're still recoiling from having been hit - which means enemies can stun-lock you indefinitely and cause some ridiculous game overs.
Today I didn't get a game over, but I had to reset because the fixed-distance thing got me totally stuck. There was a path like a horseshoe, and the Girl was dead... she didn't follow me all the way around the horseshoe, so when I made it around, she walked back up to the top, opposite me. Couldn't switch to her because she was dead, couldn't revive her because it was near the start of the game and I hadn't bought any Cups of Wishes yet, couldn't walk back around the horseshoe because it was just barely too large and the game wouldn't let me walk that far away from her.
UGH. I was going to try playing through it again, but I had some frustrating screw-overs yesterday too, and after this incident today, I think I've seen the writing on the wall. Secret of Evermore is a FAR better game in every way.
