Maybe for now, pick a color and start spamming about 10 or so cards for it? Then we can sift through them and figure out the 'base' cards for each color.

Why do you keep comparing this to Elements? This game has nothing to do with elements and will have very different game play.

Why do you keep comparing this to Elements? This game has nothing to do with elements and will have very different game play.
It probably keeps coming up because we're using 'land' and 'pillar' terms for the 'inkwell' sources.

I think 'land'-based inkwells are better for this game than 'pillar' inkwells - since 'ink' would be stored even if inkwells are lost, duo-'pillar' inkwells would have a harder time recovering from EQ-like effects than mono-'pillar' inkwells would since you gain less over turns, whereas 'land' inkwells would be a bit more constant since they don't 'grow' your supply over time. (Of course, the slower speed of duo-color could also be compensated with more powreufl cards.)

As for color development, I think it would be best to make 5-10 cards for each Primary color, and see how each color defines itself in mechanics. Are we using this as the combat system?

With the option to holding back creatures in order to leave them protected from opponent's creatures, I wonder what kind of skills/abilities they may have to be worthy that way.

Hmm, let's assume 40 hp, which will give us more options for the damage range of creatures.

1 vs 1 for now, and we can have abilities that can change this.

Ok, here are some random ideas. Balance have to come later, when more cards are created I think.

Burning Wolf
1 :fire
2/1
Rage: Have to attack each turn.

Fire Bolt
2 :fire
Deals 3 damage to target creature or player.

Defending Golem
3 :time
1/6
If opponent attacks, Defending Golem must be target for attacking. (Not sure how to word this in a good way, hope you'll understand what I mean)

EDIT: :fire = Red and :time= Yellow, if it wasn't obvious.

With the option to holding back creatures in order to leave them protected from opponent's creatures, I wonder what kind of skills/abilities they may have to be worthy that way.
Also, I am thinking about giving each color a personality, not only a thematic. i.e.  :life  only having small critters and healing stuff,  :time only high HP creatures and such
