In the religion, politics and 1 or more other sections, I find interesting to learn what others think and believe. I do not get involved because I think I would offend or get offended myself. I am emotionally tied to what I believe and that is why I should only observe. There have been ideas, thoughts and beliefs that I do not agree with, but I will not elaborate about that. I respect everyone regardless of what they think or believe.

Thank You for listening, EmeraldTiger.

There are a lot topics around here just as useless as this, if not more so. I am just expressing myself like anyone else would.

I find this is a good topic that says a lot about quite a few members of the community, myself included, that would rather not involve themselves with the drama/arguements that people can purposely boil up in the off-topic sections such as religion and politics. There are people who love to debate, I am one, and people who don't. Although, I do love to debate if that said debate were to cause drama or create a problem with another community member I see no reason to debate at all.

Personally, I think this topic is not useless (as patch said) and I'm glad to see another member share my common beliefs. Good job, ET.

I understand what you are saying but isn't the whole concept of "being offended" a bit silly? I mean it's usually nothing more than a person disagreeing with you. The way I see it, we as human beings must be able to talk about things because that's the only way we can move forward as a species. The whole idea of not being able to talk about something because it might offend someone, feels like censorship to me.

What someone may see as drama or arguments, someone else might see as a debate. The whole point of a debate is that people start with opposing beliefs and talk about them. They will naturally disagree with a lot of things, but that's not automatically something negative like causing drama or having a fight. If all discussions were just people agreeing with each other, what's the point of even having those discussions?

Person A: "I think that X is real."
Person B: "I agree."
Person C: "I couldn't agree more."
Person D: "I also agree."
Person A: "Thanks guys for agreeing with me."

Forums like that would be pretty boring and pointless.

I have one question to everyone who gets offended every now and then. If you get offended by someone having different beliefs than you, what exactly is the offence? Having a different opinion?

As a bonus, here's a comedian talking about being offended. It's not directed to anyone on this topic, I just found it funny.

Hopefully this post didn't offend anyone :)

Let me just say the key point of why I don't like to get involved. I am emotionally attached to what I believe. For me keeping silent I think shows others respect.

Ok. Hmm, I'm curious.. If you chose not to keep silent, what exactly would happen?

"Emotionally attached" to a belief sounds like something you should probably try to avoid. I would imagine it does some serious psychological damage if those beliefs are one day shattered. My method is to have zero emotional attachment to any beliefs. This way I can easily change my beliefs when new evidence is presented.

Although you are of course free to keep silent and not participate in certain discussions, I don't really see how it would show respect, unless the other option is you bashing everyone :) It's perfectly possible to participate in a discussion and still maintain a respectful tone. People should be able to freely post their opinions, and if someone gets offended by your beliefs, it's really their problem, not yours. They haven't earned the right to get offended just because your worldview is different.

I believe my wife is my soulmate.  She'd be pretty pissed if I weren't emotionally attached to that belief.

Additionally, most religions involve some amount of emotional attachment. Completely detaching emotion from ones beliefs is fine in most cases, but you cannot even come near expecting other people to not have an emotional attachment, and I feel like some beliefs deserve an emotional consideration. A lot of what is considered 'right and wrong" can be linked to emotion.

ALso, while I agree that everyone agreeing makes for boring conversation, no agreement or ability to compromise causes more problems. If person A believes X based on data and person B believes differently based on the same evidence, then the argument just freezes up, and eventually emotion will get involved. Normally how I am is I can argue fairly well and with little emotion except when someone disagrees with me given the exact same data and repeated explanations of my views. In large part that's why I opt out of politics and philosophy.
