OK, so I saw this awesome movie when it came out.  I thought about making this thread, but it slipped from my mind (yeah, life happens). So. In the movie, is Cobb dreaming in the very end?

Explain your thoughts.

The director chose to end the movie like that so people wouldn't know exactly what happened and so they formulate their own opinion. That's the fun of it. There is no intended answer.

I think he is in reality. I mean, the movie HAS to have a happy ending, does it not?

Secondly:
He did not make the level above the city level, where they get attacked by their subject's mind, did he? And: was he even the builder?

Thirdly: It DID show him riding the kicks up into the level.

Honestly, I think the point is that it doesn't matter.  The world, for him, is the same either way.  Eye of the beholder, right?

In a dream, the top never wobbles.
In the last scene, last 3 seconds or so the top develops a significant wobble.

However the main point the movie conveys is more complex
Cobb, like us, started with his mind aware at level 0.
Cobb, with the help of technology, knowingly goes into knowingly fictional realities (the dreams level 1+)
Cobb has a top that he knows how it acts at level 0, this is how we know at the end he is not at level 1+
However there still is Mal's theory that there is a level -1.
We do not know if there is a level -1. The top only verifies that Cobb is in level 0.
So at the end, Cobb starts his routine check that he is in level 0.
He changes his mind and decides that the reality of a level is not an important detail.

This is how I would have ended the movie:

The Japanese guy they try to extract in the beginning using the "dream within a dream" method. Well, they failed. Or did they?

My original guess was the the whole movie, the dying man and his son etc, would have been just a dream of that same Japanese guy, and in the end Leo and others would have managed to extract the information they were looking for at the start, therefore they wouldn't have failed.

I personally hate open endings. That is just bad writers trying to make their movie more epic by letting fans discuss about it until the end of time. It's a lame trick.

This movie was one big mind eff. After I saw it I wasn't too sure what I just watched.

Just throwing my opinion in here:
He is not in a dream. When he is, his subconcious never lets him see the faces of his children.
But maybe, I just want a happy ending, and that's a lame excuse to give me one.

Personally, I didn't like the 'twist' at the end, I could see it coming from a mile off.
But whatever. Maybe it's a selling point, to get those people who would argue for days about this to go back and watch the movie.
Or maybe they just exhausted their 'awesomeness' on the rest of the movie...

Hey, for the movie to have its own thread in this community's forum, I give +1 Karma to the movie Inception.

But I really do think it's reality. Doing some research of my own, I get the impression that the general consensus is that it is indeed reality, however they could be unreliable sources.
