I asked Higs whether it's possible to list whoever's birthday is <today> at the bottom of the home page.  That seems ideal to me.  People already have their birthdays in their profiles.  (Not everyone, obviously, but you get what I mean.)  Why make them put themselves on a calendar, too?  And then someone has to go into the calendar thread and make sure it doesn't get messy...

Much better just to get a daily list, if it can be done.  Another forum where I used to be a member did exactly that.  It worked very well.

That probably would be best. It's certainly the most common, and anything else is kind of an extension of that.

As Pella said, an updating ticker would be optimal and shouldn't be a problem to get. The calendar we had in our previous forums was pretty much never used. When I started working as a TO, I'd diligently put up two tournaments every week in the calendar for many months, but not a single person read it. If it was kept up to date with the dates for PvP Events, Trials, War, Brawl and the like, it'd give a pretty cool overview of the year, but in truth it's a lot of work for something that can be found by just reading threads. Plus, dates change a LOT because people's availability does, we're all volunteers, and moving those dates on the calendar was a real hassle.
