I have a love-hate relationship with this old SNES game.  It's kind of fun at first, but then I remember how much of a boring grind it is, plus the linear, cliché story, plus the absurdly buggy gameplay... and above ALL, the annoyance of having two dead-weight AI-controlled characters who not only get themselves killed repeatedly, they also keep you from moving forward because they get hung up on all kinds of terrain features and you can't travel beyond a fixed distance from them.  Also, there's the fact that you can get hit while you're still recoiling from having been hit - which means enemies can stun-lock you indefinitely and cause some ridiculous game overs.

Today I didn't get a game over, but I had to reset because the fixed-distance thing got me totally stuck.  There was a path like a horseshoe, and the Girl was dead... she didn't follow me all the way around the horseshoe, so when I made it around, she walked back up to the top, opposite me.  Couldn't switch to her because she was dead, couldn't revive her because it was near the start of the game and I hadn't bought any Cups of Wishes yet, couldn't walk back around the horseshoe because it was just barely too large and the game wouldn't let me walk that far away from her.

UGH.  I was going to try playing through it again, but I had some frustrating screw-overs yesterday too, and after this incident today, I think I've seen the writing on the wall.  Secret of Evermore is a FAR better game in every way.

Never had problems with SoM. I've did a full playthrough about 6 times (last one being over 4 years ago though) and most of them having every weapon and spell fully upgraded. (weapons had like a secret level I remember, wich you could obtain in the space ship)

I still listen to the soundtrack on youtube, abotu every week when I'm in a nostalgic mood. For me it's the best game ons the SNES ever. Yes, better then a Link to the past.

Never had the problem you just described though. Allthough I remember your allies getting stuck now and then :D

Yes, I've fully completed SoM a few times myself.

There's another major issue with the game: the spells.  Many of the spells are buggy, too unreliable or overpriced to be useful, or arrive so late that you'd have to spend an hour grinding to make them comparable to the ones you already have.  Also, unlike Secret of Evermore, spells are vastly more powerful than weapons, so once you have enough MP and spell levels to make them reliable, bosses are a joke.  (Not that Carltron wasn't super-easy, thanks to Energize and Barrier...)

Some of SoM's music is great, I agree - especially the first field music you hear, and the Upper Land theme.  Some of it is kind of annoying, often thanks to oppressive percussion.  The music can't really be compared to Evermore, since for the most part Evermore didn't HAVE music, instead using ambient sounds like birds, frogs, and water.  What music Evermore did have was pretty impressive... that's Jeremy Soule for you.  :)

Jeremy Soul is the composer?

Anyway, in my opinion, spells were much to strong. Especially the ones of the little sprite just nuked a boss down fast. You could chain spells and because the time froze while casting, you could basically totally lock out any boss.

Either way, I just get pain in my stomach from nostalgia hearing that music, do you mind me taking this opportuniy to link some songs from youtube in this thread? Others might appreciate it.

Hiroki Kikuta did the music for SoM... Soule did Evermore.

Angel's Fear (main theme) -

Danger (boss theme, takes about a minute to get good) -

Into The Thick Of It (field theme, my personal favorite) -

What The Forest Taught Me (Upper Land field theme) -

A Wish (Crystal Forest field theme) -
&feature=related

And I'll post some from Evermore too:

Ivor Tower -
&feature=related
Great Pyramid -
&feature=related
Halls of Collosia -
&feature=related
Airship -
&feature=related
Final Battle -
&feature=related

Evermore's one weakness was its impossibly labyrinthine dungeons.  I think I was stuck in the Great Pyramid for hours one time, not to mention that frustrating Oglin cave.
