Considering there is no board game subforum, thought I'd put it here directly in Off-topic.

So this thread is meant to just gather up all Chess players in one spot. There actually have been a few chess threads made on this forum, all spread out, that I found by using the search function, but thought instead of necroing a random one of them I'd start one new.

Personally, I'm often looking for players, sometimes just for fun, and sometimes players who play specific openings to help my opening strategy.

I play on IRL tournaments, as well as on lichess.org, and used to play on chess.com but haven't showed up on it in a while.
I have an FQE rating around 1250 for the moment, but rapidly going up.

As for openings, as white, I play 1.e4. Against the sicilian, I play it open and if I face the dragon variation I play the yugoslav attack. Against 1 ... e5 2. Nf3 Nc6, I lean towards an italian game, playing the fried liver attack upon Nf6 or if 3... Bc5 I play the Evans gambit.

As black, against e4 I play the sicilian, often leaning towards the dragon variation. Against d4, I'm currently working on my Benoni defense.

I used to play with some highschool friends like once a week and I can say I won almost every single match :P

I don't really like playing online though, I simply miss some moves every now and then and it doesn't feel like it's the same. I'm fine with playing every now and then if you need someone though.

As for openings, I'm not too concerned about their names, though I have a specific one I play every time.

I'd like to get more serious with chess, perhaps :) I play baduk, another older boardgame, been looking to diversify my tastes.

I haven't played much in a long time, but I've always enjoyed chess.  I don't recognize any of those openings except the sicilian, but some of them have multiple names, so I might know them by something else.  I wouldn't mind playing a few games once in awhile.  I have no idea what my rating might be anymore, but back when I used to play on sites like excite or yahoo way back in the day, I'd usually end up being in the low end of whatever they named the highest rank category.  (beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, for instance)

Honestly you guys should have chess-themed PvP events. I've pitched this before. Each piece is a different player (unless you don't have enough players) with a specific deck, different from all other decks on that team (so each team would need 16 different decks). Whenever two pieces meet, they battle for the square. Winner in a best of 3 removes the other piece from the board and that losing piece/player is out of the game (again, that will be different if you don't have 32 players). Higher ranked pieces can have more upgraded cards (probably pawns get 6, knights/bishops get 12, rooks get 18, queens get 24, and kings get 30, but you could also make it percentage of the deck so people can use decks over 30 cards). Teams decide their moves on the board via popular vote. Before the game starts, you get to decide which pieces get which decks and who will play each piece.

It definitely changes the game of chess up a bit, but I think you would all enjoy it. Maybe to give an advantage to the team that initiates an attack, the defending team can't use upgraded cards in that battle. That way you can't rush in with your queen at the start of the game and take out a bunch of pieces because you have more upgraded cards.

That sounds like one of the most fun ideas ever, although there is a slight problem.
High level standard chess games can take hours, as can extreme stall vs stall elements games. Put the two together and include waiting times for when players representing moved pieces are online and ready to battle, and a single match could take weeks or even months to complete.

I don't think those are problems, cactus. It's pretty simple to put a deadline on move submission, so one move every week/halfweek/2 days/etc. Having particular players play a scheduled match is harder, but that's routine in all pvp events. Worst case scenario, we just grab a sub. And the very rare case of a drawn matchup can be arbitrated.

Ya, it's all stuff that can be easily worked around, as proven by the countless number of PvP events held so far on this forum. And as Aves said, subs are always an option. Even forfeits are an option.
