Civ and ASL? No one wants to throw in Magic Realm, Starfleet Battles, Dune, Hannibal, Titan? (the last three are cheating since they have been reprinted lately). Feels weird to talk about games that are about as old as me.
@tall, My vices are many, but wargaming is not one of them. I have heard a bit about ASL, but the perceived level of complexity is more than I am brave enough to tackle. What other wargames do you enjoy? I have occasionally thought about dipping my toe in the dark side, but I have no idea where to begin.
@plastiqe, Are you playing with the Advanced Civilization expansion? I heard that was a significant improvement. I had the opportunity to play it once and passed; I have regretted not joining that game.
For those unfamiliar with Civilization, it is the golden standard of civilization-building board games. In fact, a holy grail of game design is the "Civ-lite"--a game that gives the epic feel of Civilization but plays in a fraction of the time (say 2-4 hours). Maybe the best effort so far is Through the Ages.
It is believed that this board game was used as reference when Sid Meier created his Civilization computer game which has spawned its own board game which has spawned a revision. So now you can play a board game based off a board game based off a computer game based off a board game.
@arth, I am trying to refrain from talking about CCGs here despite really wanting to make a recommendation. I will also avoid talking about RPGs despite DnD 4.0 feeling like a cross between a board game and an MMO.
Game of Thrones is a great story, great show, and great game. There is a second edition out now which fixed some issues with the first (hooray, ports!). We do not play this as much as we should, but there are just so many great games out there, most things do not hit the table as much as they should.
Doom! and DungeonQuest are designed for sadomasochists. Abandon all hope of winning and just have a good time. I remember being flabbergasted when Fantasy Flight released rules to make Doom harder. Was that really an issue?
HeroQuest sounds familiar, but the others are all new to me. "New" is probably not the best word to describe them, though.
