Questions about English? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=23513.msg299641#msg299641
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:19:59 pm »
This is a thread for people to either
(1) ask for help with English words, sayings, or grammar
(2) offer to help with such things (by PM for people who don't want to ask in front of the whole board)

Some of our volunteers also speak other languages:
an alien - Português
Astrocyte - Pусский язык
Higurashi - Svenska

I hope the idea doesn't offend anyone -- I'm not trying to "fix" anybody, or imply that any non-native English speakers (writers) on this forum aren't good enough or need to get better. But I love studying languages, and it helps me a lot when I can ask a native speaker about things that aren't in dictionaries and textbooks. So I thought maybe I could return the favor here.

Hi ztormtrooper :)  No need to sign up. Anyone with questions, ask away (or, again, PM if you don't want everyone to see).

I might post answers here for questions I get in PMs, just to share, but I would remove screen names and all other identifying info.

On the forum and in chat, I've seen several people say things like "I wish I understood English better" ...

So, here's a thread title change and a bump.

signing up as a tutor. feel free to PM me. I speak portuguese as a main/native language, and I know how frustrating it can be to not understand English very well, particularly with the amounts of it used around the web.

Podem me mandar uma PM (que genero devo usar pra isso. o_O), que eu posso ajudar vocês com Inglês se quiserem.

Suggesting to all tutprs: add a translation underneath your english message so people know what language you speak, and so they can understand you mean to help them. Not everybody knows English, that's why this thread's here. ;)

I am working with what i know of English, which is a mixture of both.

I by myself also end up memorizing sayings, since i discovered no other way. :/ Sorry for not being able to help.

My most common trouble is "phrases" or sayings in local regions or areas. It can give me different/conflicting information when I try to understand it.
I end up memorizing them.
Idioms. This is the hardest part about learning English, period, and the number one reason it's actually a relatively complicated language. The reason English has so many idioms is that it's such a culturally rich language; it's spoken over such a geographically large area and has thus picked up different ways of expression from literally everywhere.

I was an English major before I turned to law enforcement. I'm Swedish, but our educational system is top-notch and, more importantly, English is everywhere in our culture and media. We don't dub stuff, unlike a large part of Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy), which means we start learning English the moment we start listening to radio, TV, or start reading ads, commercials, news, etc. in the cities. That's how you teach a language to a people; let it permeate society.

I'm schooled in British English but have more experience with American English since most online people are Americans. Either way, my vast knowledge is always at anyone's disposal.

Hi,

I am happy to help with any kind of English. I don't want to speak for other people, but I'm sure one of us will be willing to answer almost any kind of question. Actually, when I made this thread, I was specifically thinking of sayings and regional phrases and Internet speak -- the things that you don't learn in dictionaries and workbooks  :D

(Although we're not going to do anyone's English homework ;) )

We can certainly try to help with both American and British English. Most Americans and Brits are familiar with both.

I added the names of other languages volunteers speak in the first post. That way, if people want to PM a person who speaks a specific language, they can quickly find that person.
