If you wanted to know what 的 means, it's a possessive / descriptive marker. So:
I 的 cat = my cat
green 的 cat = green cat
wearing green 的 hat 的 cat 的 ear = the ear of the cat that is wearing the green hat (these kinds of phrases could be shortened to a version with a single 的, making green-hat-cat's ear)

Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that 'hat' rhymes with 'cat' in both English and Mandarin? =9
