That is really cool, although he broke out during the eclipse, so he couldn't use fire bending.

Well, you know, Fire Nation prison. Guards are usually Firebenders. I'd rather not have my Firebending and be running away from 20 powerless dudes with pokey sticks than everyone having their Firebending.

Plus, Iroh was getting buff that whole time :3

We needed our epic Rocky-esque training montage sequence to demonstrate just how fearsome Iroh actually could be.  See, we had only gotten to know him as a kindly old man who took on Zuko as a son and could hold his own if pushed too far.  This sequence really drove home just how devious he could be (using the padding from his bed to simulate his lost fat) as well as how devastating he actually could be.  We thought we were seeing The Dragon of the West when he was long past his prime.  In reality, we only saw the slumbering Dragon.

Let's not forget he told the only guard that was kind to him to kindly relieve herself of guard duty during the eclipse night.
