Title: Uncle Iroh Appreciation Thread

I miss this guy...

*sigh* Uncle Iroh was one of my favorite characters in Avatar, if not my favorite character. Although, I think it was for different reasons than you showed in your pictures.
Iroh was more than just a comic relief character to me (although he was that, at times).
Iroh stood for peace in a time where there was nothing but chaos.
After the death of his son, Iroh put all of his energy into making Zuko the best person he could be. He did not care that Zuko was banished from the Fire Nation. He did not care that Zuko slammed doors in his face, threw fire at him, screamed at him, or said harsh words to him. Iroh was someone who was always there for Zuko in his time of need. He offered sound advice, but didn't force it at Zuko. He let Zuko make his own mistakes, but was always there to clean up afterwards.

I wish I was more like Iroh. His character is such an inspiring role model to me and I can't imagine any famous person I'd love to meet in real life more than him (implying Iroh is real -- I didn't mean his voice actor or something).

I've seen the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" probably more than any other Avatar episode solely because Iroh's story and his song "Leaves From the Vine" literally never fails to make me cry.

Such a beautiful man with a beautiful soul.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I like him for his wisdom and dedication to Zuko as well... and the back story is heart breaking. It's sad and inspiring at the same time. Overall one of the strongest character's in a series ever.

It's just that his type of comic relief was my favorite of the entire series.

Bumi and Sokka are close runner ups. Bumi wasn't around as much, and Sokka was hit and miss. That time in desert killed me :D

I just like Iroh because his firebending is second to none. Well except Ozai and the Avatar of course. *POW WHAM BAM FOOSH POW ZZZT*
yes. It's fun to watch. Iroh is dedicated.

Someone make an Iroh thread?  :P

I'd go as far as saying that Iroh's Firebending is better than Aang's. Since it's his only Element, he's focused on it his entire life and (at his age) mastered it. He's one of the only people on the Earth (or whatever planet this is) to slay a dragon.

Though Aang in the Avatar State might be able to best him in a Firebending-only duel.

There's Ozai.

Pre-losing firebending state anyways.

Although Ozai was believed to be one of the greatest Firebenders in the world, he never slayed a dragon.
And plus, he was Iroh's younger brother!
Iroh #1.

Ozai probably could've slain a dragon, but the dragons were "extinct"

However I think Iroh probably could've beaten Ozai; after all, Iroh had the 2 dragons as his master and could redirect lightning. However Iroh has a conscience and would probably spare Ozai's life, while Ozai wouldn't do the same to Iroh.

Yeah, Iroh kind of refused to fight Ozai, I'm assuming for philosophical reasons. He'd probably of won a duel...

He didn't fight Ozai because it was the Avatar's duty to do it. If he fought Ozai, even if he defeated Ozai, history would view it as a brother killing a brother, a struggle for power. However if the Avatar defeated Ozai then history would view it as an act of justice.

Iroh didn't kill a dragon, he lied about killing the last of the dragons in order to preserve their existence in the Sun Kingdom.

He may not have been as powerful as Ozai, without an Agni Kai between them it really is impossible to say.  However, his knowledge of tactics and human nature would have trumped the bestial rage that Ozai brings to the fight in my opinion.

Ah, I completely forgot about this. Thank you for refreshing my memory ^.^

Another thing I was thinking about (while I was bored in class earlier today) is that Ozai was born in the Fire Nation, raised in the Fire Nation, learned firebending, and became Fire Lord. I doubt he's ever left the Fire Nation except maybe once or twice to conquer something (even then, I would assume he'd use Azula or General Zhou).

Iroh has travelled to all the nations, studied the ways of their people, and has learned to incorporate techniques from all 4 Elements of bending into his own bending, making him that much stronger. Not to mention he's friends with some of the most powerful benders in the world (see Order of the White Lotus).

Firebending, being a naturally aggressive bending style by nature, usually gets trumped by the agility of airbenders.
It reminds me of Zuko and Aang, when Zuko would just go full out on Aang and Aang would just jump or crouch to block it.
Here's the best video I could find of that (although why he didn't just have the sound and not a song, I don't know) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvHvxAwbDcY)

That being said, I don't know if Iroh would be as swift as an Airbender at his age and...mass..
I would still say Iroh > Ozai

Ozai is just silly; no one can defeat the avatar. Duh.

Lol and the fact that he pretty much just sat on his throne picking his nose while the Avatar was mastering all the Elements is even sillier.

That is why I think Iroh would be able to defeat Ozai if it came down to a battle between them.  Let's not forget, the dude
broke out of jail without firebending!

In addition, just as Aang was able to defeat Admiral Zhao by using his own rage against him, I'm sure Iroh would be able to do much the same with Ozai.

May or may not have just found this badass fanmade picture of Iroh breaking out of prison.

That is really cool, although he broke out during the eclipse, so he couldn't use fire bending.

Not sure why he didn't just firebend his way out earlier though. I'm sure he would've made it.

Well, you know, Fire Nation prison. Guards are usually Firebenders. I'd rather not have my Firebending and be running away from 20 powerless dudes with pokey sticks than everyone having their Firebending.

Plus, Iroh was getting buff that whole time :3

We needed our epic Rocky-esque training montage sequence to demonstrate just how fearsome Iroh actually could be.  See, we had only gotten to know him as a kindly old man who took on Zuko as a son and could hold his own if pushed too far.  This sequence really drove home just how devious he could be (using the padding from his bed to simulate his lost fat) as well as how devastating he actually could be.  We thought we were seeing The Dragon of the West when he was long past his prime.  In reality, we only saw the slumbering Dragon.

Let's not forget he told the only guard that was kind to him to kindly relieve herself of guard duty during the eclipse night.
Breaking from prison and beating up people, but not forgetting manners. This, gentlemen, is class.
