Zanz said about 5% chance to win a card every spin. hope that answers your question. Every 20 spins you win a card is about the average.
Yeah, I recall him saying that on chat. Also that the cards come from your opponent's deck.

However, it seems to me that Elder (Level 3) generates a lot more card wins than Advanced (Level 2). I've won quite a lot of cards on Level 3, but never anything on Level 1 or 2, even though I did a lot of grinding on both Level 2 and 3.

... and after saying that I went to play Advanced (Level 2), and immediately won 2/2 cards.

So maybe 5% is right on target and my sample was too small.

I realized today that you get an extra gold if 2 out of 3 cards are matching.  This strongly points to the case where the end result is not calculated before the spins.  Each spin is a separate event and the rewards, whether they be gold or a new card, update after each card is randomly selected.

Gir, be a bit nicer - I've had reports about you being "confrontational".

As for the coding, I am a *very* amateur flash coder myself, and I'd code it something along these lines (not ActionScript, just what it does):

1. If the Spin button is clicked, check spinning is allowed, and if so, play a movieclip or tween on each slot
2. At the end of each tween, generate a random number, from a list of card IDs in the deck (eg fire bolt is 1, Ice bolt is 2, etc.), and log that. Display the picture that is from tha card with that ID in the related slot.
3. If the first two random numbers are the same, add one to the coin payout.
4. If they are all the same, win the card with that ID.
5. Save the results to a PHP file, or something along those lines.
6. Decrease allowed spins by 1.

If Spin All is clicked, repeat the above for the number of times that is equal to the number of spins remaining.

The matches are based on the opponents decks. The fewer types of cards in the opponent's deck, the more likely you are to get a match. I do a lot of PVP and get cards all the time playing mone-aether decks. I NEVER get a card playing rainbow decks. That's probably why you get less cards playing Level 2's, they're less "organized", more like a dysfunctional rainbow deck.

I'd note that in the old flash forum, it was said by the coder of elements that wins were about 5%.

I'd guess that the fewer cards, not counting multiples, in each deck, the better your chances.
