Would you guys be okay with Crucible and Forge cards no longer requiring art? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=59353.msg1202891#msg1202891

Hey all,

As of recently, the Crucible seems to have taken a hit on number of submissions while many wonderful artless card ideas have been made in the main forum and quickly get forgotten to time.

So after a bit of private discussion, I'd like to pitch this to the public - would you guys be okay with Crucible/Forge cards no longer requiring art? This means you can submit cards artless (still need a card image) to the Crucible; note that for once a card hits Armory, it will eventually need some kind of art.

How do you feel about this matter? Please post and let us know.

I would be okay with this.

After all, what really counts is that a card has a well designed mechanic, not if the card has a shiny picture of a potato or something. Voting may be biased in favor of cards having artwork; however, I think that's fine as you eventually have to add art anyways.

1) Including card art is a negligible obstacle now(used to be a tiny obstacle). So I think this proposal is likely unrelated to the problem you seek to address.

2) I do not consider art as affecting the quality of a card idea in any way. However I recognize this is due to a blindspot of mine. I would suggest specifically asking the opinion of some of our artists to get their informed opinion.

1) Card art requires some initial effort to find/make when most people nowadays seem to be more focused on the mechanics of a design and IMHO is one of the possible reasons we don't see as many cards submitted to Crucible now as we could. In the interest of encouraging more potential Cygnia cards I would like to minimize necessary restrictions that are discouraging people from submitting cards.

2) While not an artist per se, I personally feel having good art gives a card better publicity/appeal.

Finding accurate thematic art for one's ideas can be difficult, and what few artists we have can't make art for everyone's every card. I would agree with this suggestion.

Add art once it hits Cygnia. If you add it before it's a bonus :P

I agree with OT that the issue is probably not the need for art, but making it easier for people to post their ideas is always good. While having to look for/create art might be a good filter, we do know that it's too easy to circumvent with a stickman to be taken too seriously.

So yeah, go ahead and remove that requirement. It should pop up in Armory though.

Also, since I guess I qualify as "one of our artists", I can say that if I got requests for card art I'd be happy to try and make some for you.

The solution I suggest is I/Zephyr/Card Designer/AD give/find/make art once it hits cygnia if a card doesn't have it when it hits cygnia.

There's no point wasting time finding fitting art for an unsuccessful card, after all.

"Don't judge a book by it's cover." This is what comes to mind when I read this post, but I'd just like to mention it would be hard to garner support for a card with bad art, even if the design is good. It's also especially true if the card has relatively simple, non-flashy mechanics. I don't see this as an issue in this community, however, as majority of the forum members are vets and can probably discard the art and simply look at the features the card brings to the game.

However, as a new player myself, I find it hard to understand the idea of the card and I feel less inclined to when I see some random paint image put up as the card art, so art-less cards should be discouraged but still allowed to be put up.

My vote is yes.
