I wouldn't call them stupid. I don't speak a word of Portuguese but that doesn't make me an idiot when I'm on a holiday in Brazil.

Many of these Engrish pictures are from small (well, small for a Chinese) towns in China where there aren't that many foreigners, and even if there were, these small businesses cannot afford to "hire translators" as you said. They just do the best they can and sometimes it goes horribly wrong. I would imagine that with interweb translators and all, these kinds of mistakes go away pretty fast.

Well... How could they even possibly translate "fire extinguisher" as "hand grenade"?! Even the most crappiest dictionaries will not tell them that "fire extinguisher" translates to "hand" grenade. The Chinese for fire extinguisher is "灭火器", and the Chinese for hand grenade is "手榴弹" - two completely different things. If those people had no education in English at all, then they should think twice about trying to translate something.
