I don't know much about code, but wouldn't one program have the same "power" as lots? I mean it wouldn't be able to do more stuff, just do the stuff it can already do faster and take up more space.

If you open too many programs in the past, your computer can used out too much ram (random access memory)
and caused the computer to spoil or so called BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)

Nowadays the windows software is top notch like windows 10 unless you are using windows 95, 98 ...
And now the stores are selling computers with much more ram and just lots of better quality component.
All these factors lets users not to spoil or BSOD their computer.
