Welcome to Guilds!

Here we set forth the rules for guilds, and list the proud guilds of Elements!

  • To start a Guild, you must have at least 5 players signed up, one of whom is designated the leader.  You may name your guild anything, so long as it is not in violation of forum rules. Make a post in the guild formation thread with the leader's name, the official image of your guild, and a list of 5-10 members.
  • Normally, the maximum guild size is 10, but a player who joined the forum within the past 30 days may take a position in any guild regardless of that guild's current size.
  • A guild may remove a player due to inactivity, or via competition for guild spots with a predetermined number of players getting to remain in the guild.  Additionally, a player may leave a guild of their own choosing.
  • Guilds are responsible for choosing or re-choosing their own leaders according to the guild's own policies.  Guilds must simply inform the moderators when there is a new leader.
  • A player may not join another guild within three months of joining a previous guild.
  • Points will be scored by guilds in a variety of PvP, PvE, and non-game related achievements.  Static points do not decay over time and are player-linked - if the player who earned them leaves the guild, the points are lost.  Dynamic points decay at the end of every month, but are guild-linked.  A player earns them for the guild they are part of at the time the points are earned, and the points remain even if that player leaves.
  • You can't borrow an account for Guild PvP. If an account is gifted to you (the owner gave up all rights to it) then it is considered your account and you can use it.

Guild Point Sources:

Source
Amount
Dynamic SourcesDecay is currently being reworked. Details to follow.  No decay until end of September.
PvP League20/17/13/10/7/5/3 to the top 7 in each league
PVP Event15/13/10/7/4/2 to the top 6. Ties may have points split among tied players.
PVP Tournament10/7/4/2 to the top 4.
Mastership25 points
#1 in an Arena10/9/8/7 points for Platinum/Gold/Silver/Bronze arena, must have screenshot.
Guild MatchesNumber of points will scale on the upset factor of the winner and the size of the match.
Non-PVP Guild ChallengesStated number of points.

Static SourcesEach static source may be earned by each player. Static points never decay, but are brought by a player to a guild.
Collection Achievements15 for BE/18 for TE (each player receives the highest number of points in this category they have earned.)
Level 8025 points
Account Wins1 point per 1000 wins.

Voting events such as Brawl and Competitions have been excluded so as not to bias the voting.

Drafting-based events, such as War and Brawl, have also been excluded to prevent contrary-to-competition incentives in those events, such as drafting only guildmates rather than the best team to win.

Further point-earning goals may be added in the future.

Once per year, top guilds will be invited to compete in a Guild Championship.  The target cutoff date is March 1.

Personally, I think there needs to be a minimum post count to create a guild. 50-100 is probably a good estimate for what would be reasonable there.

Agreed, though I think upon a guild being dissolved, any member can join another guild immediately, except the person who dissolves it, who must wait the 30 days.

Love this in particular.

EDIT: Typos.

Dynamic points are interesting, and as long as non-PvP events are given enough point to go on-footing with PvP events, I think this could be fairly interesting if done right but will reserve judgement for the time being.

Here's a potential problem I'd like to throw out there: Guilds can result in people forming into small internalized circles (especially likely on a small forum like this one), which in turns means help/knowledge/etc... may be less openly shared and may promote more fighting/flaming and drama due to that increased split. (To compare, Card Ideas and Art has gotten notable mockery over the years as being a "useless section" by non-card designers.) What steps would be taken to prevent this kind of hostile environment from forming?

The simplest (though probably not the best) option would be to bar those who take part in such hostilites from participating in events for a time (for example a month, but could be lot more)

From personal experience, that works, but it also leaves at least one (if not both) side(s) bitter in the long term; I'd hope for more peaceful methods to emerge if possible.

the solution is simple:
Everyone needs to be aware of this problem.
I dont think anybody here would  like a broken community.

Does a guild get a private board?
where to show screenshots for the 'static scores'?

Zawadx and I will try to make sure that things don't become too hostile, starting with peacefully talking to those who are causing a problem, and potentially timing players out of the guild system if issues continue.  We hope that it will not come to that.

If any members of the guild system are making the experience more acerbic than fun, please let us know so that we can handle it.

How does dual in-game accounts (particularly NBC accounts) handled in regard to Arena scores?
Title: Re: Welcome to Guilds! - Rules, General Discussion and Feedback

A player may only have one account counted for collection and level 80.  Any account that reaches #1 in Arena may still receive those points.

You mentioned static points are player-based and dynamic points are guild-based, but when do you get which sort of points when you win, e.g. a Weekly Tournament?
Or are dynamic points earned in guild-based events, only?

This simply means Dynamic Points belong to each guild and static points belong to each player. e.g. Bob earns BE while he's in Guild A, then Guild A gets 15 points. But if Bob leaves Guild A for The Cult of Laifu Guild, his 15 points travel to The Cult of Laifu too (so Guild A has 15 static points subtracted and Laifu has 15 added). But if Bob won a tourney while in Guild A, the 10 points he earned belong to Guild A. Even after he leave Guild A, those 10 points will remain in Guild A's dynamic point pool, tho slowly decaying over time.

Time to give feedback. You both did a very good job in organizing and making guilds a thing. Rules (beside the decay-thing, but you know) look fine and the first quest didn't let us wait. Thank you for that!

I suggest to merge some topics. Rules and scores can easily be packed in one topic, as well as General Discussion and Suggestions/Feedback to make the board more clear. Then - a thing that isn't that needed in the moment, but will be soon - you can stick the current quest, so it is always found fast even if there is a lot of activity in the other topics.

We've gone and tallied points from the current Trials, regardless of the date the final was played.  Other than Trials, we've decided to count July 1st as the starting date for all other events such as tournaments, Arena Rank 1s, PVP Events, and more.  12 Lives will award full points as well (regardless of the date an individual's exact place was determined).

Guildmasters were hoping to do a puzzles league or something along those lines, but we need confirmation of activity from all guilds. Do you guys think it would be ideal at start of war? New rounds would probably be twice per week. Hope to get a response from at least one member of every guild.

Explain wat puzzle lea*ue means.

Every round, a new puzzle will be posted, with somewhat increasing difficulty. Every team which can solve the puzzle will advance to the next round.
Or we could just have a few weekly puzzles. I believe a puzzle league format is more exciting.

Do you guys think it would be ideal at start of war?
Clearly no. People in War will be busy enough.

While this is true for pre-war prep and deckbuilding phase, during the duels phase players don't really have that much work. Puzzles could be fun during the downtime.

Does that mean you can post screenies of rank 1 decks since guilds were created in July?

Or only screenies starting when you signed up yourself?

Rank 1s from alt accounts really should not count, i find it a bit unfair as every single other forum event specifically prohibits multiple accounts.

Although I stand the most to gain from this out of anyone, I've been debating this in my head as well.

In the past, alts for Arena purposes were frowned upon, but we have a smaller playerbase now. I still don't really want us to crowd the Arena, so ultimately I have to be against allowing alts to count as well. The only problem with this is that it's much easier to get #1 in non-Plat nowadays, although it's balanced out by most guild members already being in Plat. Might be the guild point reward for each Arena needs to be tweaked. Oh yeah, looking at it, it definitely needs to be tweaked. It's easily twice as easy getting there in Bronze and Silver. 10/8/6/4 seems closer to reality.

Requesting update here, the score doesn't seem to reflect anything.

Also, not being a fan of alt accounts in the first place ("I want to dominate at all levels" - work on your ego, my friend), I agree that arena points should only include main accounts.

I just took down aetherfish from #1 again, only to have my second NBC account get the first spot because it was in second. Thought that was poignant considering the above discussion.

On GvG, starting to seem like challenges should occur every other week to take the stress out of Guilds as was intended, however the challenge itself should still be posted in the first four days of the first week since it takes the rest of the week to set up rules and players. This is a little bit tricky to enforce, but seems important considering two parties are put on a short timer if the challenger dawdles.

This should also help reduce the impact of GvG since it can single-handedly decide the winning Guild at the end of a period.

One way to reduce setup time would be to post finished rule formats for people to use. That way you can cut out the correspondence time it takes for the two parties to clarify everything. It took me two full days to explain to ian what TPvP was x)
If we get several pre-made formats up, we shouldn't need 3-4 days to set up rules anymore.

Right now, Dynamics decay to .75 of what it was the prev month starting from the 3rd month. This means that a year later, .05 of the points still remain. Rate of decay is quite slow at an exponent of .75, reaching practically zero or .001 at a power of 22 or two years after points are added. We could change this to a cut in precentages (.75 -> .5 -> .25 -> 0) but that would make many months obsolete for the championship cycle. What do you guys suggest for dynamic points? Perhaps we remove them all and have it reset after a championship cycle?

We will also be changing point totals. Major pvp events like WC deserve more points, and more static points should be awarded for titles such as Grandmaster. Of course, we will be changing arena rewards and disallowing alts. Thoughts on the matter? Which points do you think needs changing or adding?

I'd like to take some suggestions for polishing the guild system. I have already planned several changes in accordance to people's responses in chat, but I would like to get more opinions to be formalized in this thread.

Currently planned:
Title: Re: Welcome to Guilds! - Rules, General Discussion and Feedback
Post by: RootRanger on May 19, 2016, 04:22:39 pm
  • What is your opinion about guilds giving rewards, in the form of codes or icons, for the whole event? Since there is a plan to tie the whole guild system into the championship, does a casual yet whole-year event warrant an award for the whole team? If not, then what should be the scale of the rewards? Suggestions:
Icons should be proportional to the number of participants, and until that number rises, anything more than one icon is excessive. Whether this icon goes to a guild-voted MVP or the guild leader is of less importance to me.

  • Should there be a change to the size of guilds? 10 seems to give people a good chance at joining guilds casually, but the problem is that it's not giving them much opportunity to join events. However, this might also be a good thing as it does not force them with the obligation of joining every event.
Possibly. You might have more accountability in terms of players participating in events.

  • Non-PvP: It seems that there is more interest on tasks and puzzles instead of creative non-PvP, and since this will have less overlap with competitions and brawl, is this a welcome change?
As always, depend on the time of non-PvP. I'm personally not much a fan of anything involving voting or other subjective means of determining a winner.
Title: Re: Welcome to Guilds! - Rules, General Discussion and Feedback
Post by: JonathanCrazyJ on May 19, 2016, 04:41:14 pm
Yeah, I liked the puzzles and tasks much more, as they are more unique.

I did not like the vague "do something creative" part of the guild champs, because that kind of elements tribute style task is done in Brawl and Comps. I also agree that with many people on teams, any kind of voting would be a bad idea with regards to Non-PVP.

I like the idea of an MVP vote for the guild to decide who gets the icon. i don't like the idea of many many icons.

I also dislike the idea of guilds being ultra competitive. I think at the moment they have a good balance of well run, semi-competitive, but ultimately not hugely important. They allow players a sort of guild identity, promotes being social (I wouldn't have got to know dragtom so well if not for guild puzzle league) and are a fun way to smack-talk other guild players without being serious. Having one MVP icon go to the winning team would be a nice way to commemorate effort, but without making the whole thing too competitive.

I don't think that having a single person in a guild getting the icon is a good idea, as it might cause conflict within a guild.
Even if it is predetermined who gets it (guildleader), it'll feel like 'I worked hard for an icon that you end up having'.
Either reward a whole guild with something, or, more likely, nobody.

I'm not opposed to include creative stuff in guilds.
One thing guilds should focus on is teamwork.

finally, I agree with JCJ on the competitive part.

I'm seeking feedback on the idea of semi-live guild events, and want to know how guilds' leaders would feel about the idea.

For those unfamiliar, the idea of a semi-live event is that each guild would choose a time that worked for them to start completing one or more challenges, and time taken would be at least a factor in the overall score.  The time  would only count for each guild from when that guild received the challenges, allowing guilds to choose a time which works for their members while still allowing speed to be a factor in the competition.

Rewards and competition: If we're keeping the current guild sizes, we are not giving rewards to the whole winning guild. This means we're either giving it to the MVP, or keeping it simply as a hall of fame in the guild section. And to make it not too stressful and competitive, I will adjust the pace of the planned system to make it more suitable.

Non-PvP: Overlap with Brawl and Competitions will be avoided, but creative non-PvP will not be ruled out. Personally, I also dislike a voting system given the varying levels of activity between the guilds, so that will be avoided as much as possible.

So, uh... discussion and feedback.
Well, there's one thing that I feel is worth mentioning: guilds feel kinda distant to me. Not being active when guilds became a thing is a huge factor, no doubt. But then I'm wondering: if I feel like that, how are newer members supposed to feel about it?
I can't really tell and maybe guilds need more work in general before trying to reach a larger public, but... yeah. Just looking at the first two posts of this thread I see lists of rules, regulations and points. Nothing that welcomes players new to guilds with a brief overview of what's what and where to look. But it's called "Welcome to Guilds!". ...where's the welcoming committee?

Oh, for the record: that's not my obnoxious way of saying I'm interested in joining a guild, but rather: what are they about, and why should I want to join? What kind of commitments does it come with? Where do I find the fine print that says I'm signing my life away? The guilds I know from other games were mostly just a gathering point for my numerous alts! Me, myself and I: we always had great fun in guilds together.
It's like by just naming it guilds, they're supposed to create a certain association that makes people go "Oh, guilds! I want in!". But this association is different for different people. To me, it currently just makes me feel indifferent. Yet the enthusiasm for it from some people make me wonder what it's all about. And the guild events, some seem fun enough.

Anyway, consider this some food for thought from a different perspective: one not currently involved in guilds.

Council has been discussing Guilds a lot over the past term. Someone has to step up with a clear, convincing vision for how they would solve the problems Guild had in the past. That is if we are to take the path of reviving it.
Council is in early discussions of how we could possibly take the option of refocusing the community on something other than Guilds to improve the active community member numbers etc. I don't know how long that discussion will take. Due to how early in those discussions we are, I can't provide more details at this time.

so guilds are officially dead? not even trying to hire guildmasters and trying to see if they come out with something? a poll to see if someone want to form or be in new guilds? nothing?

There was a lengthy discussion within Council about revitalising Guilds. There were some good ideas raised and good points made, but ultimately, none of us had the strong ideas or the vision required to see the project through to completion - that is, to provide a full revamp for Guilds and completely bring it back to life. That project is currently marked as Dismissed because at the time we weren't able to make any more progress on it. That's not to say that it can't be brought back!

Manuel, if you have any ideas for bringing Guilds back to their former glory, please - let us know!
