On the subject of upped cards, I say no... it really just complicates stuff. And besides, no upped cards means no shards, and that saves you a rule right there...
Seriously, the simple is often the best.

I have an idea! A tournament where, in each round, we have to use 6 copies of one specific card.

Ex.
Round 1: Plague
Round 2: Cockatrice
Round 3: Bone Dragon
...etc. etc. etc...
