Art Class / Re: Lesson 1: An Introduction
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:29:53 pm »
It has been a day of false starts, frustrations, and mistakes as I figure all this stuff out. I also just realized I drew the darn thing in landscape which isn't very useful for a card. Sigh. My hand is cramping, so I will leave it at this sketch for today.

Basic idea: Changeling as a mass of black goo shifting into a skull masked thing holding a crappy version of the vampiric dagger. The new shape is still only half formed in the image and rising from the goo. I shall spend tomorrow figuring out how to paint it halfway decent and post again.

Why I am doing this: I need something creative to do. I had been making things for the competitions, but have wanted to pick up drawing again. An art class is a great way to keep myself from getting lazy and the feedback/suggestions would help me improve. I have done some art with charcoal drawing, but not really all that much. Zero with digital, so this is all new to me.

Edit: Now that I look at it again, I think it needs a chin.

Peace on the planes and goodwill toward all elements.

ps asymmetry, pepokish didn't make that leaf dragon. I believe Sunny Greens made it as a tribute to pepokish's original
The leaf dragon on the magazine is by pepokish.
Yup, all pepokish. Sorry but my artistic abilities are far, far below anything like that.

You're welcome. I don't know how this will help vrt and peps, though :P
I think you can help very effectively by providing your own opinions and critiques of peoples work in the art class. If you want to go this in depth, great. Something a bit lighter and quicker, also great. Help vrt and pepokish keep the discussion going and keep people learning. The last of the few art classes I ever took had that going for it. Everyone examined each others work and detailed what they liked/disliked about it, what they thought worked well and not so well. Everyone learns, everyone wins during discussion.

Thanks for the analysis asymmetry, it's very helpful. Also, yes, something like this could be very helpful over in the art class. I know I certainly enjoyed your critique!

I agree less is more, (up to a point)  but for 9 to be a real parody, some details i would've loved to see, were absent.
I will ask you too then: please elaborate?

Okay, you asked for it.. :P

The text at the bottom left corner is kinda hard to see. And the text "Leaf Dragon" could be highlighted by using a different colours or text style. Though everything fits the NatGeo theme, it could use a little bit more colours to make it more interesting. Also, you could play around with the image and the border - example .

Nevertheless, your idea about the NatGeo theme is brilliant and that is why you've got my vote. :)
Ooh, I like the example. That certainly would have been fun, unfortunately I have no idea how to do that. A solid chunk of the time making this was spent figuring out how to make pixlr do what I wanted it to do, so I stuck close to the actual Nat Geo magazine style. Wanted to keep it recognizable so I didn't play around too much, though I guess the golden rectangle was all I really needed. Next time, next time...

#9 is genius but could use more touch-up to make it even better.
Could you elaborate?

Card Idea Competition Submissions / Re: Kinship | Kinship

If you remove the one time thing, it would be sweet. That will make those fractal users think twice.
Hmm, more I think about it perhaps you're right. I had thought it would be too easy to abuse, but at this price it shouldn't be too bad.

Alright, upped the cost a bit and made it permanent. Decided to make it single target only like Gravity Pull to try and keep it balanced.
