Card Art / Re: Free Art for Card Ideas
« on: December 01, 2011, 06:01:35 pm »
I added a bunch of new images. They are really random but maybe someone can use them for their idea, or maybe they act as an inspiration for some new idea. :)

i like the bone wall upon death mechanic
i dislike the huge amount of hp, doesnt seem like this should have more hp than collosal dragon or even bone dragon, for that matter.
I agree.

I think the Bonewall effect is slick, but the HP thing is kind of cheap. Ivory Dragon looks similar to this guy, yet it has 5 HP and this one has 75 HP. I just don't see how someone made out of bone (and brittle one as it is slowly dying) could have this much HP just because it's big. Armagio looks like a transformer with futuristic armor and stuff, yet even that one has only 25 HP.

I would have liked this more with the "Supermassive" and with less HP. The Bonewall ability itself would have been enough to make this card interesting imo.
Is the art really the focus here? If art's the main problem, (which it's not), new art can be found. This is a fantasy game. A little mouse could have 15 attack (though it is improbable), and a giant bone dragon can have giant Hp.
Nope, the theme is. Some people might look at the mechanics only, but I look at the whole package.

If we look at how Elements is now, we have Skeletons which are really weak and Bone Dragon which have less HP than the average Dragons. Now we would have a new skeleton creature that has more HP than half the creatures in the game combined! Going from dragon to dinosaur would give you 15 times more HP. Dinosaurs are big, yes, but not that big. I think that if we start giving high HP, the creature should have epic armor or something. Brittle bones that start to deteriorate as soon as you play the creature, do not sound like 75 HP to me.

I think the Bonewall mechanic is great and this creature would be great if it had less HP, but I don't see this bony creature as the highest HP creature in the game. You might have a different opinion.

I have talked about this before. You cannot do something that is illogical and just say "this is a fantasy game". Doing things like giving a little mouse 15 attack would be just unrealistic and lame. Even though this is a fantasy game, we should not completely forget basic things like physics.

Just checking - what are the differences between this thread and this one? (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,5998.0.html)
I just merged that topic with this one. Plan is to have one awesome sticky for all your card art needs.

Card Art / Re: Use Photoshop to convert ordinary photos to oil paintings!

would be interesting to do this with GIMP. Anyone know how too?
I had a quick look and this was the best I could find: http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/oilpainting-from-photo.html . Doesn't look very good, but at least it tries to go for the oil painting look. :)

You need to go rob someone and buy Photoshop.

This card is actually more versatile than almost every other card in the game. The restrictions are explicitly stated; however it can be used in more decks because it is not bound by a single element. For example, the card Sky Blitz can only be used in any decks that use Air (mono Air, any element/Air duo, etc). This card can be used in any deck that uses Air, Life, OR Water mark, (mono Air/life/water, and any duo that uses any of the three element assuming it has the mark). Of course the mark is a somewhat limiting factor but the amount of decks this card will fit in outnumbers the deck any other single-element card can fit into.
If we use that Sky Blitz as an example, I can use it in any deck with any mark, as long as I can pay that 9 :air. This card however forces you to use one of the 3 marks, which seriously limits my options, seeing how important a mark is in a deck. I guess it's a matter of an opinion, but I don't think a card should ever be limited to 3 marks only.

I also agree that this it not unique enough. There are many ways to destroy permanents. I'll throw in one random idea.

What if this card weakens all the opponents permanents? And when a permanent is weakened, it can be destroyed by any attacking creature. So basically permanents would turn into pieces of Bonewall. They would still function as usual until they are attacked. It would fit the theme and make this card unique.

Just an idea. :)

Off-topic: There are a few different vectorization sites out there, if you want an alternative to photoshop. I've used http://vectormagic.com/home to make photos look life less real-life-y. Two of my cards have art made this way (though the latter has heavy editing well)
Yes, that's the tool I used in this old topic (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,6259.0.html). It's a good free alternative to what Adobe Illustrator can do, but I currently prefer this Pixel Bender Plug-In because it does things like hair much better.

I use PSE9 and it don't have that filter.
It's only for CS5+ unfortunately.

Competitions / Re: Competition: Holiday Fun Redux!
« on: November 30, 2011, 10:26:21 pm »
What defines 'late fall?' Apologies if I'm sounding picky but I'd just like to check that.
Well, Wikipedia says that "holiday season"..

Quote
..is generally considered to run from late November to early January
.. whatever that means.

About the rules..

I believe that although this is a "fun" competition, it's still important to have very clear rules because there are awesome award icons involved. If people are allowed to submit whatever (like Chuck Norris etc.), it's going to be unfair against those who did use the holiday season theme, because they had to deal with this pretty big restriction. If we had an "expert panel" to pick the winners, it would not be that bad because they could weed out random submissions. But because we have a public poll, which for example always seems to favor anything that is related to boobs, the winner of this holiday season competition could very well be a submission that actually has nothing to do with holiday season, which would be a shame. For example, I took a look at all the submissions we've received so far, and there was no "holiday season" in a couple of them, unless I missed something.

It looks gorgeous - too bad I don't have Photoshop.
Yep, that is one major problem with this method. :)
