Science / Re: a solution to the time travel paradox

Right, only problem is as you get closer to the speed of light the more massive you become, that is you become infinitely more massive...  so as a carbon based life form, we aren't getting to those speeds without crumpling into our own little personal black hole of sorts...  so how do you purpose it maybe be possible to overcome that, also important to this debate, is it necessary for us as a human to travel back in time, or perhaps it's only important that information may travel back, how do you purpose that may be possible.  (Looking forward to your next post.)

Philosophy / Re: is abortion correct when it saves the mother?
« on: December 13, 2011, 11:09:45 pm »
First here are a few biological understandings that must be understood.

1.)  Their are conditions, diseases, and physical events, that do happen that do mean the baby has 0 chance of survival or might already be dead that can or will be a severe risk to the mother.  The argument that 'how can you possibly know' is B.S. we have developed things like Ultrasound Machines and various genetic testing methods.  Since, the baby is in effect will never been born alive the answer of abortion/dnc is the only ethically correct answer in this case.  We have the ability to save some baby's who in the past would have never made it, why not also exercise the ability to save the mother when we have it.

2.) A baby does not have a wonderful survival rate even after birth, and their are a lot of hormonal based things that go on that greatly effect both parents and the child.  A child not close to it's mother has a significant chance of developing one of many anti-social disorders.  While in utero a mother unknowing may send cells to attack the baby while under mental stress such as Rape or a mental disease.  This is the muddy area.  However, their is an interesting physiological test that I can't remember the name of it, but it's very famous for showing moral absolutism is unethical...  so you can see it's a case by case bases here which once roughly answer divides it between 1.) or upcoming 3.)

3.) A baby is likely healthy but the mother does not want it.  Well, first, there are many other methods of birth control, so it's not really all that common except in cases where teenagers and adults have been prevented information on birth control.  So for those areas, lets continue...  It's already been shown through many socio-economic studies, that it is better at this time for society as a whole for the mother to proceed with an abortion, as it significantly declines crime in general, murders, and a variety other societal problems.  From a pure population versus planet sustainability aspect, it's also been shown that at this time, it's better to have less baby's.  So from a pure societal aspect, go ahead mom.  However, this is also where Religious doctrine and some ethical questions do exist, such is is killing the potential baby a slipper slope.  Just because it's good right now, doesn't mean it's right.

So let's go view the Religious doctrine aspect.  In the U.S. where this debate is pretty heavy, it's mainly the religious, particularly Catholics and Fundamental Christians.  Well for the Catholics I can't say much, per their doctrine it's the Pope who interprets the scripture and not being the Pope I can't sight them much.  Although for all other Christians out their, the rest of Christianity broke away from the Catholics for a reason, and the big one, is to be able to look at the Bible themselves and not having unknown edicts placed on them from a Pope.

For non-Catholic Christians:  I site you these:
Exodus 21:22-25:
"When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."

"As you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.” (Ecclesiastes 11:5)

Although than be fruitful and multiply I have even when going to the old Hebrew and Germanic version can not find a complete verse that support's Anti-abortion.  Perhaps you can give me one.

This leads finally to the slippery slope argument, the question is, is the baby living?  It is in the form of a parasite up until near birth (Yes, by definition parasite), during that last trimester though, their is the ability for the baby to survive, and in fact, the mother if she dies, typically will attempt to birth the child giving to random chance of it's survival.  So, it seems, for the third trimester we have something that could turn into a living thing all by itself, so it appears slippery slope argues, no late term abortions.

But, that's exactly what we have in the U.S. no late term abortions, huh, it's almost as if their is nothing really here to argue about, we already have on the books what is ethically right....  hmmmm....

Science / Re: a solution to the time travel paradox

First, there is a general misunderstanding of time.  Time is the change of position, it is motion itself.  Time is how long it took object a to move from position a to position b.  Their is no before time, because their was no motion, nothing moved.  If you roll the hour hand back an hour on a clock did you go back in time, no.  Did the little hand move, yep.

The idea that you physically can go back in time, besides this  is also IMPOSSIBLE, not because of the paradox, but already proven LAWS OF PHYSICS.  Matter and Energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only change state.  To physically move you to a previous time, you will have to take the equal amount of energy and matter and transfer it to present time.  There are a lot of paradox's that prevent this as well, including our favorite Cat in this game.

According to Einstein's Spacial Relativity.  Going back in time from the point you current are is IMPOSSIBLE as well.  As is not mathematically possible as time and space are bound to each other.  Now, space can warp, and this is where going forward relatively is possible.  If you hop on a space ship and travel near the speed of light, space warps around you, so when you return to earth.  Earth relative to most other things will have moved as it normally does; however, you will have moved slower, so it will appear relative to you, that you have gone into the future, you also have no way back, that's a one way trip.

What about jumping to a 5th dimension, well then you don't know about multidimensional manifolds yet; however, it will exist outside of time itself, but that does not mean you can go to any point in time, it means, if you can detect time, that you see all motion at once, all TIME at once.

This can lead to some interesting ideas about black holes, multiverses, and entanglement.  Anyone who kept up and understands everything above feel free to start going into those interesting ideas.  For it maybe possible at a certain starting point once a device is setup, that we could get messages from the future or other universes.

Science / Re: Determinism
« on: December 13, 2011, 09:36:55 pm »
Determinism versus Free Will or Non-deterministic.

Well, in closed systems we can prove small cases of determinism.  However, in cases where the system is not closed we can't prove it.  Also it's very hard to prove as 'reading' the 'information' change's the result, hence the Cat Paradox.   So the only way to predict this is if we had a complete model of particle physics (which we are near with CERN, a few years away probably) and a change in most of our Physics based Calculus; because it is based on the Kinetic side of the equation and not the potential or 'information' side.  Although, I know of changes coming soon by a certain Physicist about to publish in the 3 largest journals about a different model for calculus, which is interesting as a lot of approximations go away doing so.

Sadly, in the end, I predict their is no true Free Will, just the appearance.  However, that does not mean we are not responsible for our actions, as at this level their is no way to calculate what is going to happen because we can't get a good Snapshot because of the Cat Paradox again and and the very idea of proving true Free Will wrong will change how you think again, and everything changes again.  So, in effect as X approaches infinity our equation looks like when we are racing against something to infinity but it had a head start.

Politics / Re: election 2012

The very definitions of Conversative and Liberal have changed, at one time it meant how a person read the constitution.  Conservative meant literal interpretation, versus Liberal meant conceptual interpretation.  I think, this changed past the whole Greenback's (or paper money) debate.  Prior to that, I am not certain.

Today though...  today's political-land scape makes me sick, as in I almost throw up if I start thinking too hard about it.

I'm going to admit one thing here, on this rarely viewed message board with the realative anonyminity that exists on such things:
I've done a lot in my life,  I've been a cook, salesman, housekeeper, soldier, a manager, an inventor, and an engineer.  I am father, son, brother, and husband.  I've made and lost a lot of money.  I've lived well and have been homeless.  I've had to defend my life, and I have done so without taking another's.   I've been called up in scenerios where with in a few minutes something horrible that will take hundreds, thousands, and sometimes in the tens of thousands of lives and what I know and say is what is standing between preventing the crisis, and then told thanks by voice on the otherside of the phone and slip back unnoticed again.  I look to the newspapers to see if anything was posted, sometimes their is, rarely though and I wonder how many potential incidents around the world had just that past day were prevented and never mentioned again.  At first I took an ego to it, I SAVED THE WORLD, then after a while, it became those ungrateful son's of bitches, what if I wasn't here, then I realized, their is almost always someone their, otherwise every day humanity would be falling apart.  If I didn't answer, someone else would.

Few things truelly scare me, but one thing does and that is as I've learned and experienced more, I have realized their is a small collective of people who control everything, but it's not an illuminati that is all knowing, instead it's driven by people's greed and they do giant experiments of exercising control of society, humanity, and and every so many generations it reaches a peak before the system comes down.   I fear for the future.  Perhaps, this is the point all older people get to, they eventually gain enough information and knowledge about the comings and goings of people, we see what previous generations have created, become afraid of it, attempt to fix it, but ultimately find ourselves unable to fix humanity as a whole.  I hope that is it, me getting old, and not some WWIII.

General Discussion / Re: ETG: Viewing it as a scientist :D (Happy?)
« on: December 12, 2011, 08:18:09 pm »
Correct, speed is just one component of velocity, velocity also has a direction; however, in elements their isn't much directional space we talking abount.  A 2d plane exists, where the attack goes only on a single line.  Attacking may be said in the positive direction and receiving an attack goes in the negative direction relative to yourself.  Since this is true, we can simply apply just a single scaler, being speed.

However, thank you for pointing it out, as when applied in our world the direction matters significantly, and things like super glue having a great bonding strength in one direction, but next to 0 it the perpendicular direction matter significantly when an object stricks the thing being held by the super glue and my above explination was sloppy.

Want to geek out on this all science like, then fine.

Based on the words brought up so far:

Acceleration = The rate of change of velocity per unit of time.
Something that has accelerated, that is increased it's velocity, by definition is moving faster. As something moves faster and strikes an object the force or amount of energy transferred to the object increases, thus increases the amount of damage done to the object.  The object provides an equal amount of counter force thus likely damaging the striking object more as well.  So the effect of in this game that is of the Card and Ability of Acceleration is moderately accurate.

Adrenaline is a hormone and a neurotransmitter. It increases heart rate, constricts blood vessels, dilates air passages and participates in the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system.  This allows a biological creature to move faster, perform greater feats of strength, and ignore pain, through this increased heart rate and constricted blood vessels, and increased oxygen.  Sometimes this is to the detriment to the creature, such as cases of spreading poison through the body faster.  Their are also Adrenaline junkies who get addicted to Adrenaline and traumatic experiences often will through off the natural balance of the neurotransmitters in brain function and often continue to operating with higher than normal Adrenaline levels.  Once again the card is not too far off from the truth.  Poison spreads faster, the creature gains more strikes by moving faster.  One can argue some creatures might do more damage; but, that's about it.  The game does not define how long a turn lasts, and cases of adrenaline dumps can last hours in some cases nor is their representation of a creature feeling pain, so the ignoring of pain is also not noticed.

Aether:  According to ancient and medieval science aether is the material that fills the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere.  It was to be the pure air the God's would breath.  Since science has dis-proven just about all of this, the term has changed to Ether, and are a class of organic compounds that contain an ether group — an oxygen atom connected to two alkyl or aryl group.  Which would actually be part of  :life   and not dimensional shielding.  The element itself completely fails

Antimatter:  In particle physics, antimatter is the extension of the concept of the antiparticle to matter.  An antiparticle is a particle with the opposite charge as a normal particle.  So take a set of 2 9V AC batteries for example.  Align them positive to negative in the correct direction, and the electron current flow goes in the correct direction resulting is a total of 18Volts of potential energy.  Now switch one of them and you now have 0V of potential energy, reverse both of them and you now get -18Volts of electricity resulting often electronics getting damaged.  This is the idea behind the antimatter card, it is switching the the polarity of the object.  So instead of 3 damage you now have -3 damage.   The cards.  The game mechanics don't quite fit since the terms are healing and damage, not negative and positive charge, however on a math level it kind of works.

Black Hole:  A black hole is a region of spacetime from which nothing, not even light, can escape. The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass will deform spacetime to form a black hole.  Around a black hole there is a mathematically defined surface called an event horizon that marks the point of no return.  Those things outside of the event horizon can escape or are often accelerated.  These are usually found in the center of galaxies.  Their is one in ours.  Some theories predict the otherside of a blackhole exists another Universe pocket, thus feeding higher state energy into that universe birthing it.  As blackholes pull in more matter and energy, the more massive they become increasing their gravity.  So the fact that blackhole in ETG sucks some electrum away makes sense, the energy simply got to close to the event horizon.   This energy then increases the gravitational pull thus making the blackhole stronger.  In a kind of round about way, you can say the elemental using gravity just got more gravity, thus stronger thus healing.  It's a stretch but it kinda works.

Butterfly Effect: In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions; where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state.  So, in effect butterfly effect, allows a creature to briefly flip back in time creating a nonlinear system resulting in a change in something else.  Things can exist or not exist or change identity completely.  Only one of these is represented in the game mechanics,  things get destroyed by no longer existing, so it's kind of Butterfly Effect with less possible outcomes.

Maxwell's Demon: In the philosophy of thermal and statistical physics, Maxwell's demon is a thought experiment created by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell to "show that the Second Law of Thermodynamics has only a statistical certainty.  Since then the thought experiment was naturally analyzed close and their is no paradox.  (A paradox is something that by definition contradicts itself like A= B, B= C, but C <> A, this can't be and so can't exist.  So their is no paradox according to modern science.  However, at the time it would have caused the 2nd Law to have a paradox, hence the ability, and so their for anything under a paradox ceases to exist, hence the ability.  It is shown in the upgraded version of the Demon having 3/2, having the ability to destroy all other things with more hit points than life, so it assumes a rule was placed down with that demon, that it is the only creature with more hitpoints than life, and anything under it's gaze causes a paradox and hence can not exist.  So in that stretch it works.

Mitosis: Mitosis is the process by which a eukaryotic cell separates the chromosomes in its cell nucleus into two identical sets, in two separate nuclei. It is generally followed immediately by cytokinesis, which divides the nuclei, cytoplasm, organelles and cell membrane into two cells containing roughly equal shares of these cellular components.
In otherwords, a cell splits itself into two based on it's DNA and continues to split everything else until you have two roughly the same cells.  The card takes this to a macroscopic concept, which can be found in some plants as Asexual reproduction.  So the game assume that all buffs and damage are ignored since the original DNA is the original card, unless the card was from a mutation, inwhich case the DNA might be damaged and subject to a higher rate of mutation and you get another card...  so nothing to see here, move along.

Schrodinger's Cat:  Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment, usually described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. The scenario presents a cat that might be alive or dead, depending on an earlier random event. But without interfering we don't know.  The state of the cat being both alive and dead is considered entanglement.  Entanglement has been proven, in as large of an object as two smallish diamonds.  So the card triggering both a death event and still being alive is consistent, assuming the Cat is entangled some how.  Although the ability should probably be passive, and as soon as the cat interacts with something, lets say attack or get's frozen the entanglement should break thus preventing the ability from continuing.  Still, it's pretty close.

So their you have it, most of these are actually pretty close to science outside of Aether itself...  happy now?

It's a 'magical' game your trying to apply Science to.   If you want to do that Aether doesn't exist...  it's been dis-proven in science.

Other than the direction of the anger. Is there any difference between OWS and the Tea party?

The tea party is slightly older, but it generally started in the same vein of anger as OWS, and was attacked in the same way by people not associated with it as a movement. (aka being made up of ignorant and or uniformed people who did not know what they want and weren't giving any solutions)

Im not saying that that is true. But I can see some definite parallels between the two groups and how they have interacted with the media.
Yes, they come from the same anger and frustration, but from a different starts, perspectives, and methods.
A bit of the Tea Party's path:
The Tea Party started from Ron Paul's libertarian party who want the smallest form of government possible, having a lot of it's membership mixed and taken over from the social conservative members after McCain lost but Sarah Palin had a lot of grassroots support.  Fox News trying to support McCain had picked up Beck and others and used it for ratings as well as supporting their executive's agendas continued to support this movement in what became the Tea Party.  This Tea Party like the libertarians see most problems as stemming from the government in general, and want the smallest form of government possible but mixed in is the extreme social conservative.  The GOP and Corporate entities with strong Republican ties,  saw this movement and did not want it to operate out of GOP control.  In other words, they did not want another Independent Party/Ross Perot interruption of future elections like what happened with Bush/Clinton.  The figure head at the time being Sarah Palin was unfortunate for the movement as we would later get even verbal confirmation from her and her husband, were sellouts just looking for money.  So she sold out the Tea Party brand, got her spot of Fox, etc, etc.  And made statements like the Tea Party will not be a separate party, but operating within the establishment, and named their specific demands.  The movement still carriers on and has it's effect is felt.  The establishment I think wanted it to become a shadow of what it could have been and be more of a puppet control method to keep conservatives in line.  However, one thing the Tea Party has is it's convictions and is hard to control, although it's power and numbers have waned quickly.
A bit of the OWS path:
OWS came from a lot of different sources collective internet sites and hive mind outrage building up over time.  It has influences from all different sorts and places, and each person's individual out rage is different, but the collective theme being Corporatism and/or Plutocracy has taken over America.  (Sadly, it seems it maybe true as many documents for JPMorgan/Chase show a concerted effort to shift America to a Plutocracy have come to light.)  It's hard for them to explain what they want is the Plutocracy to end when most people do not even know what a Plutocracy is or as an economy Corporatism is.  They come from a mostly more liberal view point with their bases being the Rich and various major industries control our government and that's the problem if we are to be a democracy or at least a decent functioning republic.  So instead they are trying to get everyone to show their hand.  For example, almost no-one knew that Guilliani put in a program where members of the LAPD can be purchased from the city for various policing tasks by individual corporations, while if a false arrest is made by performing this task, the state is on the dime for the fall out.  Our the militarization of local police as shown when the Florida police department brought out a tank.  Now a lot more people know about it and they can start seeing such corruptions exist outside of crazy conspiracy theories.  They also wanted to change the terms of conversation, instead of liberal versus conservative or democrats versus republicans which tend to be shifting around 50% and neutralized, as setup by Game Theory advocates of the Cold War suggested it should be.  Hence the 99% term.  This is probably their biggest contribution to the political dialog as it's significantly changed many of the conversations and even some of the policy making.  It's also brought out things like a lot of the problems with the Tar Sands Pipeline.  Finally, they don't want to fall into a flash in the pan, and if you come with a specific set of demands they can be attacked, brought down, and mocked.  Instead it's hard to kill the movement, the only way to do it is to try to make it not looked organized and immature and to attempt to dismantle the groups in the camps to keep a physical presence existing.

so the tl;dr; version
Tea Party, Same source of Anger but directed at the government with conservative view points and specific heads with specific demands
OWS, Same source of Anger but directed at corporations and the rich with liberal view points with no specific heads and goals are generalized exposure to change the nation's viewpoint.
