Religion / Re: Why not Islam?
« on: January 13, 2011, 08:42:29 pm »
Seconded, I have read a detailed biography of Julius Cesear, where the author has provided a wealth of evidence supporting most details of his life, but I dont remember hearing any evidence proving that Jesus exists. If any religion is going to be the most accurate, it will be an atheistic religon like Buddhism (or similar religion), where the main principles are founded in philosophy rather than people/god(s).

Getting back on topic, IMO cultural and parental influences pay a big part in the choice for most people. Most people who have grown up in a specific religion wont change because they either believe in it or they dont want to risk their social and economic status.

There has been a lot of media (games, movies, novels etc) about superior aliens conquering Earth and enslaving humans yadda yadda, but there has been equally as much media focused around helpful aliens who reject the arrogant notion that they are superior to everything else and go onto support and nurture flourishing species without becoming overly involved in their development.

I personally find it a shame that we cant apply the same principles to animals, but I also feel this is very much a rl issue. I dont buy into the whole violent video games=violent person philosophy.

Apologies for being away from this thread for a while, I genuinely havent had the time to write anything more than 2 or 3 lines long recently :-[

I would contest that honest citizens would want to work to help support their community
Honest does not necessarily mean magnanimous.
Perhaps I am being a little bit naive here, but I would hope that most people would have the maturity to realise that society will collapse if people dont work and would want to protect it, if only to save their standard of living. If everyone is paid the same wage, then everybody has a stake in watching that wage either increase or decrease week-by-week, leading to a sense of societal responsibility. If we liken this hypothetical communist government to a small ship which has sprung a leak, I would expect everyone to head belowdecks with a bucket in each hand just to save their own skin. Generosity has nothing to do with this, everyone is pulling together for a brighter future, which in turn helps pull the country together and promotes interest in every political decision (e.g. closing a car factory on the other side of the country will have a direct effect on your wage packet, promoting interest).

For those needing added incentive, throw in a carrot and stick scheme
Do you have a metaphorical carrot on a stick to suggest?  I can't think of a good enough one, myself.
Hmm, a pretty tricky question. Im sure there are plenty out there, but im struggling a bit myself. I'd probably start by introducing a second currency, lets call them currencies A and B. Peoples wages are formed from currency A, which can then be used to pay for anything. Whereas currency B is performance related, but can only be used for a pre-selected list of "luxury" items/holidays/events etc. Somebody with experience in economics would need to check this over quite thoroughly, but it seems to be a feasible carrot.

As for the stick, people who refuse to select a job (without a good excuse e.g. old age/illness/education etc) will lose all (or possibly part) or there entitlement to currency A and definately wont be receiving any carrot.

Nationalism didn't work too well for pre-WWII Germany or Stalin's Russia.
Im not entirely sure about Stalins Russia, but the Weimar republic period for Germany (often referred to as the Golden Age) was a time of growth for the country (despite the oh-so oppressive treaty of Versaille hanging round its neck). Many of the phrases from that period are still useful today, such as "Joy through work, live through labor". Admittedly, hyper-inflation wasnt great, but that was due to the specific governments bad judgement rather than a failure in the form of government.

If the person hoarding money was clever, innovative, lucky, or born into a wealthy family, then it's not a problem
I disagree with this point. Why should person B have an inferior quality of life to person A, just because he is less clever/attractive/charismatic? Things that he is born with and cant change. Doesnt seem fair to me...

Exactly.  How many people collecting enough unemployment and food stamps to buy a flat screen TV can you imagine will be motivated enough to go out and find a 9-to-5 job?  It's the same phenomenon we're seeing in county jails - the lazy sometimes commit crimes so they can be sent to jail and watch TV and sit around all day.  (Prison is another story, usually being much more dangerous and long-term.)
As for lazy people, they will have to meet the almighty stick (see above) and either start working, emigrate or starve.

Communism ftw! :D

EDIT: Humorous addition removed as requested. It made me smile...

General Discussion / Re: We need more rares!!
« on: January 07, 2011, 07:07:01 pm »
As far as im aware, there isnt such a thing as

uncommonly spinnable.
In fact, I find it to be easier to get a rare card by farming a T50 than any common card. Which means that the difference between your "uncommon rare" and "rare rare" are negligable as things currently stand. Roll on T500...

ok, a little off-topic, but I was at the Oracle, and had my fingers crossed and hoping for a red nymph, and spun, and do you know what it gave me? MY 3RD *beeeeeeeeeeep*ING PURPLE NYMPH!!!  and i thought," *beeeeep* YOU*beeeeep*ING
*beeeeep*Y *beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*!!!

lol, right?
all true.
Pics or it didnt happen! ;)

Movies & TV / Re: ANIME!!!

Code geass is epic. Closely followed by FMA, FMAB and death note. Plenty of good anime out there. Ive just got to the end of KHR, which was alright but not amazing (despite being ~200 episodes long).

For the budding psychotic killers out there I recommend higurashi no nake kuru ni (and its sequel) as well as elfen lied (although alot of fan service in this one).

Ive just started watching Baccano, which although being really short (only 16 eps) seems quite funky so far.

Religion / Re: What Religion Are You Interested In?
« on: January 06, 2011, 09:21:17 pm »
God does not care what religion you practice.  Simply do the right thing, and the right thing, and if there is a god, he/she will respond in kind.
If I was a good priest (or elder, shaman etc) then I would point out that god is completely different to a human being and that your idea of the "right thing" may not be the same as his (or hers), ergo they might view your good deeds in a negative light. I would then naturally point out that my particular holy book (bible, koran etc) is the only reliable way of knowing what god considers to be righteous, followed by converting you to my religion and stealing all of your money.

Atheism ftw...

Wha chu talkin bout? Its ridiculously easy to get rares atm, you can easily get 1-3 per hour by farming the top 50. Remember, they're called "rare" for a reason ;)

Desperatly attempting to drag this back on topic...

My current wishlist
1. More cards (standard :P)
2. A buff for time and perhaps water, they're looking a lil weak atm
3. A modification to the trainer allowing players to build decks for the ai to use. This can allow you to counters to certain decks (rush, ccyb, rol/hope etc). Also useful in pvp events if you discover your opponents decks beforehand :D
4. A way to make rare cards rarer. Ideally i'd like to see rare cards as rare as nymphs. Perhaps by limiting rare cards to tournament prizes and oracle spins?
5. MOAR AWESOMENESS!

This would would make me eternally grateful.....well until the next update anyway.

Nope, no postulates. There is only undeniable fact and solid logic based on it. In your second point, im not sure which statement you are referring to?

Politics / Re: communism. is it really so evil?
« on: January 01, 2011, 12:40:42 pm »
Communism is impractical because for honest citizens it removes most of the incentive to excel (it's just gonna be taken away anyway), and for dishonest ones it removes the incentive to do anything at all (you'll be provided for without working).
I would contest that honest citizens would want to work to help support their community and that dishonest citizens will find ways around working well anyway by their very nature. I'd also like to point to the third group of citizens that capitalism completely ignores, the unemployed. This ranges from young people unable to get a first job; to homeless people on the street; to old people forced to retire early due to health and safety issues. With communism, everyone will be paid for, therefore everyone will be found employment. For those needing added incentive, throw in a carrot and stick scheme, add a healthy splash of nationalism and hey presto youve got a very healthy country.

Sure, you get some wealth hoarding, as long as it's honestly gathered, there's nothing wrong with that.
Hmm, I struggle with the idea that you can stash hoards of money away while a fellow American citizen is starving on the streets due to unemployment. It doesnt sound fair to me.

Other than that, I really dont understand American politics enough to comment :P

Well, I cant prove to you that I can think, but the very fact that im considering this argument shows to myself that I can think. In order to think it is logical to assume that I must exist (in some format).

=> "I think therefore I am"

Your second point is highly dependant on the definition of "exist". My definition of somthing that exists is "an object (no specified format) that has the potential to interact with me". Under this definition, if an object does not exist, it will not affect me and whether or not it can think becomes a moot point.

EDIT: On second thoughts, by thinking, I am interacting with myself, therefore under this definition I exist.
