But actually it doesn't have the "o" before the ugh necessary for that pronunciation.

Linguistically, it could be two syllable: "Ot-yug" or three syllable: "Ot-ee-ug".

There is an English town called "Loughborough" pronounced: "Luff-bor-er". Some Australian friends were visiting and called it "Loo-ger-ber-oo-ger"

For me it's simple. In hungarian we have the consonant "ty" (a bit like tu in Tuesday, IPA says it's tj), so for me it's otjug

(officially it'd be /ˈɒtjəɡ/ or /ˈɒtjuː/)

I seem to be the oddball here...

I've always treated the 'y' as silent in the pronunciation in my head: OH-tug

Not sure why but I suppose early on I was unsure how to treat the 'y' whether "yu" or "ee" so silent solved that irrelevant conundrum.
