The reason it doesn't work is because of the mechanics of the Flying Weapon card.
Flying Weapon is a pretty simple script which destroys your weapon and plays a creature version of your weapon. The implications of this are that the creature versions of all weapons are pre-set, and thus the creature versions of every weapon are actual cards that aren't in the regular circulating set, just as marks are (although they used to be).
The other important point about Flying Weapon is it doesn't target. It takes whatever is in your weapon slot and throws it into the field of play. This allows for flying Morning Star/Glory, which is inherently immaterial both as a weapon and as a creature.
