Unofficial Tournaments

It's been done before, so I'd like to bring this topic up for discussion - what do people think of having users host unofficial tournaments every now and then with their own designed rulesets?

While many ideas in the PvP Ideas section and PvP Tourney section do go through, there are often others that do not. By hosting unofficial tournaments, players can not only get a chance to create their own PvP 'events' but also test their rulesets to see if they are feasible for actual tournament/PvPE play. In addition, since most tourneys don't last more than a day it's easy for players to simply appear and try things out for fun, rather than having to plan ahead for longterm PvP Events.

I totally agree of having unofficial tournys; they will be like the official ones, except no electrum and nymph/mark or fancy cup prizes. We can also use the tourny room if able at that moment. One tourny per week is just not enough!

No, it isn't. In Duels we have only two participants (the Challenger and the Challenged) while in unofficial Tournaments we can have 4, 8, 12 or 16 participants, maybe more than that!

Duels are one-time-only battles and require the participation of only two people. Unofficial Tourneys require a group of people (probably 6>) to participate and battle each other. (ninja'd)
In addition, some PvPE Ideas have 'linger' effects that allow winners/losers to gain benefits based on victories or losses. Unless you want a really long chain of matches in a duel (such as best-of-7), it's harder to have such effects occur when less players are present. (another rule that benefits from more players present would probably be 'randomize' or 'steal/copy from enemy' rules that are made less predictable since players don't know what they're facing anymore, rather than just the same opponent with a different set of cards.)

The purpose of this thread is to encourage the creation of unofficial tournaments by all users on this forum, as well as discuss how they interact with other parts of the forum and how they can be improved. If you're willing to host an unofficial Tournament, go straight ahead and start your own topic.

Former (unofficial tournaments), because I'd think it'd be easier for people to commit to one day than several weeks. PvPE Ideas are mentioned here as a possible source of ideas, and one-day tournaments with modified rulesets from PVPE Ideas could be used to observe/tweak how these rules work.

However, if someone is fully willing to host unofficial events and knows their schedule is open enough to do it, I'd fully encourage them to do so.

I remember jijo doing SHUTs. However, interest faded after a while and they eventually stopped.

I would be interested in participating, and helping if my schedule permits. I've been wanting to get in on a tourny, but it just hasn't worked out yet. I propose a practice tourny event towards the middle of the week to offset the main tourny or allow people to post unofficial tournys which they host and take care of the specifics for. Allowing people to host their own tournys would require them to post the tourny with enough time to garner participation, and the community would also need to be understanding of any bumps in the road for new tourny hosters.

This is a great idea.  I feel that it would generate more continued interest in the forums as well.  There would just need to be a way to regulate it so that 15 people don't try to host unofficial tourneys each week.  Maybe a sign-up thread?

I was actually thinking about that. It would be the best place to put them IMO.

I just wasn't exactly sure what the best way to implement it would be, and still am not exactly sure.

In any case, if you want to start an unofficial tourney thread and don't know where to put it, you can go ahead and place it in Duels for now.

What about having one or two unofficial tournaments organized in the Duels section each week? I suggest the Duels section for the following reasons:

1) In Duels section you have to make a personal topic about yourself, your challenges, your topics etc. so that would prevent unkown noobs from appearing out of nowhere and participating, or even ruining, the weekly unofficial tourny. 8)

2) In Duels section there are usually active people who love participating in challenges and what challenge is greater than a weekly tournament?

3) Duels sections needs some 'advertising'; it clearly hasn't the popularity so much deserves. An unofficial weekly tournament may be proven the best advertisment for the Duels and it will definitely bring more people there.
