I change mine infrequently and the change always reflects a change in title.  Every time I try to switch away from an eye, though, I get yelled at by a variety of vets.  So I guess I'm permanently in plastiqueue's same yet different camp.

I really don't mind when people change their avvies. I know someone who changes it every single day, and that's fine, but that's because only he did it. Avatars are the quickest way to identify people, so changing it too much will lead to confusion and more time spent looking at each individual post. In general, don't change it more than once a week and it should be fine.
