Tutorial remake: Thoughts please! https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=49468.msg1074105#msg1074105
« on: May 25, 2013, 01:31:42 am »
I have seen This tutorial was very helpful for many newcomers, but now it is definitely outdated.

I asked Higurashi if I could remake it, reformatting the decks that are still "neat rareless monos" of each element and changing the ones that can have obvious improvements. She said she would replace it if the remake was worthy.

BUT there can be made a better "neat mono" for 10 of the 12 elements starting with  :darkness faster and easier than starting with the respective element of the mono, because it is sold for ~200 electrum higher than the other starter decks. In many cases the difference is impressive.

Should I keep the "start with whatever you like most" speech or make a tutorial of the actual best way to make a consistent first newbie mono deck?

Spoiler for proof:
The following decks are the closest to the neat ones that can be made just selling cards from the starter decks, without playing a single game, both for  :darkness and the respective elements

 :time
Its price is 80  :electrum under  :darkness, that difference compensates the cards  Time's deck already has for a mono rush. Both can make practically the same mono Time rush and a neat ghostmare.

 :water
Its price of a NT rush is so low that any starter deck can build it.

PS:
  • I may make a thread in GS&F to lower the prize of darkness cards in the bazaar too. Hopefully zanz will read it in the future
  • I am making more than 1 deck for each element, not necessarily rushes

i would say put both options personally if i was advising a newbie i would say pick an element that appeals to you choose that starter, use your first run to learn the ins and outs of the game and second runthrough reset account and pick which you prefer, the element starter deck and have the best deck you want that you can build, or pick the dark starter and decide the deck you want and get that.
love makin my decks unusual if able. Chaos and luck are widely regarded as different i beg to differ just refer to :entropy but for those in the know also refer to :time and :death.

It's a good article yes, but it gives off too much of a feeling of "do this" instead of letting players figure out for themselves some of the aspects of the game. Grinding is a big part of the game, but the true fun and enjoyment comes from figuring out combos and good decks by yourself.

Its nice to have a point where you can fall back from if you screw up. This would provide just that. Which in my opinion is perfect for starters.

In general, there are two types of gamers:
1) Those who learn by doing.  Don't read anything, just jump into the game and go.  These players are VERY unlikely to read the tutorials before they begin, so let's not concern ourselves with them in the "So you're just getting started" threads.
2) Those who read before they start or very soon after.  These players are the ones who will be reading the tutorials in question.  These players will appreciate having a first deck laid out for them.  They will explore deckbuilding on their own later.

I am a #2 type player.  I think what Chapuz is writing is excellent the way it is.  It needs some fine-tuning, but it's definitely on the right track.

Personally I believe there is a #3 a mix of the 2 aforementioned players, which tends to be what I am. I tend to mix in games I play as to whether I read guides or just jump in and have fun, or a mix. I usually choose mix unless I feel like I understand it already.
