I have a mark of life. Is there any benefit to using a life pendulum over an emerald pillar or vice versa?

No extra benefit, however you can use a split of both to help against earthquake.

To clarify, earthquake destroys up to three pillars/pendulums in one stack. If you have three life pillars, one earthquake destroys them all. If you have two life pillars and one life pendulum, a single earthquake can't take down all three.

This is the one and only difference between using a pillar that matches your mark and a pendulum that matches your mark.

The same thing applies to the earth card protect artifact/ enchant artifact.  This card can be used on a whole stack of pillars/pendula.

So if you are planning on using nymph's tears in your deck that would be another incentive to split stacks.  (With just one stack your opponent needs only one protect artifact instead of two to prevent you from targetting your pillars with nymph's tears.

Or if your strategy involves your own use of protect artifact, you may have cause to use only pillars (or only pendula) instead of both so that you only have a single stack to protect.
