Question about disconnecting?

From what I know, when you desync or disconnect in the middle of a PvP game, it just tells you that the opponent isn't responding and the AI takes over.
But, occasionally, I get this thing at the top in the middle of "Your opponent is not responding" and it tells me "You have disconnected from the game. You are about to lose in X seconds."
It's ends up being an instant loss that you can't do anything about, so I was just wondering what triggers this to happen.
It's kind of annoying to lose without being able to do anything about it.

i see this 6 or 7 time today, each "your opponent is not responding"... its a loss? i thought, its a retry... but if not
