Doesn't it already match you up with someone with similar score?  If it does, this new system wouldn't get rid of it.  However, this would limit the number of opponents you could play by adding another criterion.

Good point.  Adding counters seems fair to me.  Now, a lot of ideas are posted on the forums, but Zanz doesn't have the time to review all of them.  If we started a poll, we could have some data.  Then we could PM him and have a greater chance of getting this idea off the ground.
