i think 'phoenix' (the ability, not the card) has a higher priority/order on death trigger
not sure why zanz made it that way, not really complaining either since phoenix (the card) is quite unique
It's more than that though.  'Phoenix' has a higher priority than Graveyard, as well.  The Ash takes the spot of the Phoenix and the Skeleton has to fill the next available slot.  Since no Cell is created when a creature with the skill 'phoenix' dies it is actually negating the effect.  I think it is because the Cell is programmed to take that exact spot rather than the next available slot and in the case of Phoenix it is already taken.

I tested a Spark with Aflatoxin while a Graveyard was in play.  The Cell took the Spark's spot and the Skeleton the next available.

Growth creatures can only avoid being turned into an afla as long as the quanta is there. Once that runs out, it turns into a cell when it's HP reaches 0. Same with the angels.

So much discussion about my 'as-is' statement. I should have worded it better. I meant creatures only. Obviously, you can't infect a spell or permanent, obviously there are cards that can kill the cell. Completely not what I meant. I meant unaltered, as it is when you play it, creatures.

IMO, the phoenix should generate a malignant cell when it dies. It's most probably a bug where the game won't effectively process some effect stacks. Or phoenix is just made special. ;)
Definitely not a bug. It's been discussed for awhile, and I'm not 100% sure, but I believe zanz once said it wasn't a bug and programmed that way.

What exactly do you like about the fact that Pheonix doesnt generate Cell when it triggers on-death effect? Just that its exception to the rule? Why not make it that Afla "beats" Pheonix? Or, in a crazy world, that every card does what it says on the card when you buy it and place it in the deck.

There are more and more cards that sometimes do what it says on the card, and sometimes do something else. I cant see how that is a good thing for the game, future players and whatnot. Clear set of rules are crucial for any game. Having bunch of exceptions is just poor design.

Honestly, I dont care if Pheonix will turn to cell or not as I dont like Afla as a card. It is a weak card that can find its use only against undeveloped AI. I just dont understand the stance "oh it breaks the rules, I like it". If this game ever increases its card count, we'll need to print out manuals to be able to play the game, and pay people in chat to deal with daily newbies and questions about adrenaline.
