Sometimes a random creature seems to start on my side at the beginning of the game (top right of my 'card area')...why is this?

A pet - check the ? icon  of "pet"on the oracle screen. You often get one for the first 3 non-PvP battles after your oracle visit.

A pet. Some days the oracle gives you a random creature to use for 3 AI battles.
