Often it's unappreciated to post in "old" threads, which were inactive for a "long" time. Is there such a principle on this forum? There's no line about it in the Rules, but I'm still unsure.

Generally Yes, but if what you're posting is contributing and not spam, it's fine. Also often better than making a new thread.

Thank you. I guess, good rule of thumb is "if thread is inactive for a week or more, think twice and then think twice again".

The forum gives you a message/warning if you're posting on any thread that hasn't been posted on for 2 months.  Otherwise, yeah, you'll need to use your own judgment before posting.
