My big thing is I assosiate avatars with people. If they change especially to something very different, its mostly jarring. But I adjust. A weekly change may be to much.

I've been doing that recently...

I too associate avatars with people, but can pick up on change quickly.

Hopefully I will stick with this avatar, to prevent future obnoxiousness.

This is my 4th avatar on this forum. I didn't even want to change from the burning cat, but this Superjail scene was just too awesome.

I like it when a person has a fixed avatar. As other have said, you get used to knowing who posts just by seeing that avatar. It gets troublesome though when someone else has a very similar, or even the same avatar. A good example would be 10 men with his hourglass avy. When a new person with an hourglass avatar posts, I always think it's Ten.
I don't have a problem with those who change every week or so either. I get used to it.

I suspect this thread was inspired by some forum regulars.  =P
I tend to change my avatar to match the events I'm participating in/hosting (recent example w/Trials of Light's Sun/Moon theme, which followed into Elementshifted with a Darkness elemental.).  Like Annele, I also switch sometimes based on my mood, and sometimes I'll recycle old avatars if they fit. (If the avatar switching does make me look obnoxious, I'd like to apologize for that.)

I rarely change my avatar, as almost anyone could tell anyone asking. I'm not a huge fan. i pick one thing to represent me, and usually stick to it for a good long while.

Plus, why would I change from this one?

Sry Oni... not a fan of animated Avatars...

Pretty much this. Slow loading flash/shockwave-based advertisements + animated avatars do not bode well for my humble laptop when it's still booting up.

That said, I don't mind it -that- much when a person keeps on changing their avatar weekly or even monthly, but chances are, the more you change your avatar, the less likely I'm going to pay attention to you. If you change it DAILY, then you're one of three things:

1) Still adjusting to your new ability to identify yourself (i.e. - you reached the post requirement to get custom avatars)
2) You're indecisive, attention-seeking, and/or insecure to just let your words do the talking instead of a flashy picture
3) A virus or hacker has gained control of your profile and has nothing better to do than to change a .jpg while you're offline


I only change my avatar whenever I'm in war, but I think it's illogical for me to have a broken hourglass that constantly leaks out sand... perhaps I need a new one soon? (btw plastiqe, nice mention of your empty alleyway = inactivity, that's pretty genius when I think about it)

I agree. Big signatures with images and stuff, as I have sometimes seen in other forums, make it difficult to read through a thread, I also don't like that.

Regarding the original questions: avatars are part of the creativity of the persons in a forum, so it's ok to change. I personally would also consider weekly excessive, but every month or so would be ok for me.

No, it's ok if someone changes them once a day, I usually don't notice them and have hard time remembering them. Probably just getting old...
