Is there any way other than an user giving you reputation to gain it? I found myself with 3 of reputation, while I know where the first 2 are from (starting one+one user who repped me), I don't know the other one, and wondered if it had something to do with posting or such.

Giving it to other people adds whatever your reputation amount is to their total (not their represented amount below their name). As you have 13 rep, if you +rep'd someone with 990 rep, or, 9, you'd bump them up to 1003 (10)

Battle is a forum mod that allows your forum profile to gain rpg-style stats like atk, def, hp, etc. You must have at least 30 forum posts to participate.
