Title: A thing about NickNames
Post by: Opsinis on February 16, 2013, 05:45:30 am
Hey all! Quick, nice, post-provoking thread here.

What's your nickname? This can be your Elements forum (but most likely chat) nickname.
Also, do you like it? Would you rather be called something else? (If so, what?)

Mine: "Op" is pretty common. "Opsinis" doesn't get too many nicknames, but the shortening proves to be enough.
It's fine with me.

Absol from Absolute Zero.
Sometimes:
Abs, 'bsol (thanks jenky), Absolol - only variation of Absol.
Lorem, LoremIpsum - because my standard avvy contains the phrase "Lorem Ipsum blah blah"
InigoMontoya - HELLO! My name is Inigo Montoya.
KABOOM - F&H, when i used to spam Octane's Loose Cannon. Kev made it stuck with me.
AliceMargatroid - when fooling around with Z in chat, since she's my fav character from Touhou.
SethRosenwell, Seth - no one knows this beside Drake and Z. I think.

My name is often shortened to just Rut or Ruta, and I don't mind at all. I still like the sound of them both.

Where do I begin... Sko, Skot, Skota, Potato, SimonPetrikov, and Skub are the bearable ones.  Cullen, GlitterFear, and FrightBright kinda annoy me. Let me know if I missed any.

Mine's pretty short already, and no one's shortened it yet.
The word "pella" is an ancient Dravidian word meaning "elephant".  The Dravidian peoples (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_peoples) live in the southern part of India.  I chose the name because elephants are my favorite animals, and because I have an affinity for India--including its people, its culture, and its religion.

All of which is probably more than you wanted to know.  ;)

Vin: that sounds like short for Vincent or some other name that has nothing to do with my real name. But it is fine as short for my chat name of course.

Vine: *whip whip* yeah.

Viner: um no please. Sounds like "whiner".

Vinny: Errrr...it's ok I guess, although I think it is a bit too girl-y...

Viney: Is fine. Not girl-y.

Post by: Kuroaitou on February 16, 2013, 08:58:43 am
Hm...

Kuro: The standard short-hand. Aside from this being commonly linked to me liking Darkness (...which now I'm starting to rethink >.>), it used to be a common and somewhat confusing nickname back when Kurohami was a frequent chat (and staff?) member. This is the most straightforward and appropriate nickname in my opinion.

Kurator: Please stop using this. I am not a curator any longer, so while amusing, it's not really applicable, and it feels awkward.

Kur: Also stop using this. Sounds weird and doesn't look right given the context of my name.

I'll leave my other nicknames out of this. :P

Drake
- Very obvious and straightforward 'nickname'

Kaito
- Only used primarily by ZBlader and maybe Absol in regards to a popular writing persona of mine

Drakku
- Another common way to modify my name [ドラック]

Post by: moehrpi on February 16, 2013, 03:13:40 pm
I'm usually called moehrpi.
moe is fine, too, although it is pronounced differently. This name might eventually establish in chat.
moeh is only acceptable if you know how to pronounce it in German, since it sounds more like my real nickname.
Lemoe ist another deviation used in other occasions.

Either one is fine, whereas I prefer the first two.

Post by: willng3 on February 16, 2013, 04:40:59 pm
Lord, where to start:

Will - Pretty self-explanatory, and probably the most frequently used.  William also gets used from time to time though I'm not sure why.

willu - I really don't know how this one got started, but it's grown on me a lot.  It probably has something to do with me calling Higurashi Higu.  Just maybe.  Alternative plays on this include willur and willru.

willing - I don't know if I should consider this a nickname as much as someone reading my username too quickly or assuming I spelled it wrong, but I'm sure there are some people who do it even though they know better.  Several of the first impressions I have of people start with this.

Willy - I'm pretty sure this was only used by jmdt.  It's been a while since anyone's called me this now that I think about it.  I actually don't like it when someone calls me this in real life, but I had no problems with jmdt using it to refer to me for some reason.

Wally - I don't remember who started using this one, I just remember it annoying me.

And then there's a whole list having to do with something about Frogs or being Master of Life.  Those seem to be used more around Trials time though.
I usually won't respond to someone who goes out of their way to create a nickname for me that really doesn't have anything to do with me or my username unless I know the person very well.  And by that I don't mean we've spoken a few times in chat.
I'd also like to say that I have a terrible problem with settling on a nickname when addressing someone who's more than just a chat buddy.  Lord knows how many times I've changed my nickname for Higs.  Unfortunately this problem originated in real life before manifesting itself here >_>

Well... Y'see, look well now....

... Does "Dm" count?
Dm itself is the Nicknamed part of my lenghty Name over the internet, the numbers are just there to fill in space and pass by the "3 letter minimum" "4 letter minimum" "Bla bla bla" stuff.

@Willng3 - I was the one using wally, IIRC. :3

Post by: vrt on February 16, 2013, 06:42:35 pm
'v' - apparently some people are lazy enough to shorten a 3-letter name.

'verti' and 'verticae' - because it's the 'full' version of my nick.

Trouble - I am a lot of trouble :)
TT - don't like this one very much but I can deal with it.
Title: Re: A thing about NickNames
Post by: ddevans96 on February 16, 2013, 08:29:05 pm
dd: Most people just use this.
ddevs: Other people use this.
ddevans: Some people use this.

Most people call me one of these three. There's other variations though:

ddev: The only one who really uses this, at least that I can remember now, is vrt.
ddevz: This started when dinosaurs roamed and chat and forums were separated and my chat name had a z on the end. People condensed and kept the z.
ddevans96: Some people, mostly those trying to make a good impression or more formal characters, like DesertKnight, use my full name.
Evans, evans: A few people call me this. The first one that I can think of using this is Napalm.
Mr. Evans: Matrim used this after I drafted him in Draft 2.
DD: A few people prefer capitals. I don't mind this.
dede: Mostly just xn0ize, I'm okay with it.

Nothing else is really relevant.

I've been getting "Elby", "Elb", and "El" a lot. I wouldn't be opposed to even just being "L" if someone was too lazy to type the "E". Elby I'm not so much of a fan of, because it sounds like "Shelby", but I'm not one to be picky over nicknames. I'm strongly of the opinion that a nickname should not be chosen by the person who has said nickname.

I suppose "Elbrin" almost counts as a nickname, seeing as how that's how everyone spells my name until I harass them about it.. xD

Post by: Annele on February 17, 2013, 03:45:38 am
People just called me Annele before I was too well known.
However, when I became a Curator, I remember Kuro, I think, calling me Ann. I hate the name Ann, or Anne (for various reasons, but the one I'll leave here is that it doesn't suit me at all, and I'm never called it) but I didn't want to offend my new boss, so I asked for him to use my RL nickname instead - Nel. Of course, the next time I was in chat I went open with this; people could call me Nel if it's easier.
Since then, I've had many variants, though basically 'Nelly' is the main. Bripod calls me Nele in Earth chat though, for some reason, which is also fine.
I only ever call myself those names though, if I forget to identify myself in chat and don't want to go around with the nick "Guest1690" or the like.
Just don't call me Ann, and we should get along fine. :)

Got Laxadarap, but that is a whole 4 syllables, and most people can't spell it right, so I've been called Laxadarp a couple times on the forums now.  Now when one person cannot handle the entire 4 syllables, they derp out to 3, and hence: Laxaderp.  Then if your super lazy (Muricans), I can be condensed even farther down to "Laxa".  Then if you happen to be a man with a vag, my name is LaxaNiggah.  Yup.

EDIT: Also, if your superass lazy: Lax

CuCN - My username.
CuCn - Please capitalize all three letters if you're going to capitalize any.
cucn - OK, I guess.
CuC, cuc, Cu, cu, c - You're too lazy for the fourth (third, second) letter?
coppercyanide, cuprouscyanide, copper, cuprous, cuprum, cyanide - Fine, if you want to type something that's longer than the username itself <.<
cyan - Fine with me.
002 - I'm a secret agent! (Only by kim/73. It does have something to do with the username.)

0z9tu - My username on Kong. (It's a bunch of random characters.)
0z, oz, ozzy - Common abbreviations.
wizard of 0z - Yes, I have seen this plenty of times. Don't do it.
otyugh - One person on Kong uses this. It doesn't fit me at all.

Username/IGN = regen2k9

I made this as my kong username in 2009 before I played elements.  I've always played MtG and at the time I was really into fooling around with regeneration mechanics in the game...so regen (short for regeneration) came from there.

Secretly, I've always hoped that people don't misinterpret my name and think I'm a girl with an alternate spelling of the name "Regan."  I'm a dude.

Chat nicknames:
Reg = At first I red this as "regg" (rhymes with egg), and I didn't realize that people were probably saying "reej" in their heads lol.
RNGen2k9 = by far my favorite nickname of my username.  This came from War 5 where I somehow won several VERY unfavorable match-ups that on paper should have gone the other way.

In my case, the meaning is unsure; I only know that the name I use as a nickname here (and in plenty of other cases) is a small part of a full name.

Strangely, most of the people spells it wrong, some can't even pronounce it correctly. (Actually, it's something like: ,Ah-ne-'nee-n[e]nn)
So, the short form is usually Ane and never Ani, after all I'm not a Skywalker, f*** it! ^_^

For those who still don't get it, I am most certainly not "RR." Here is a list of nicknames that I will actually go by.

First, let's start with the ones people use here.

Root (Seems pretty obvious)
Ranger (Equally obvious)
RootRanger (For those who just don't like nicknames)
Wintergreen (Draco started using this, don't quite remember his reasoning lol)
Rootbeer (Well, it is a decent drink. Used mostly by Jen-i iirc)
RainBro (Not used in a while but I guess I could go with it)
Borussia Dortmund (Odii called me this here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,49417.msg1073279.html#msg1073279))

And we can't forget the nicknames that people call me in other places. They can still totally work on this forum if you wish.

Rot (I guess that the second "o" is pretty redundant. This was used on a different game forum)
Rotbeer (This was also on the other forum)
Rootie (Used for yet another different game)
Crech (Irl name and LoL username)
Crechure (Meh why not)
Crechure the Preacher (I guess I rant a little bit lol)
Tryndamere (It's a LoL thing)

Then there are the names people don't call me but I will still certainly respond to.

Pro (What can I say, I'm pretty pro)
Near (Death Note!)
Jarvan (Again, it's a LoL thing)
Rooster (Dude, Roosters are freaking ferocious mofos)
Range (For those days when "Ranger" is just too much to type but "Root" is too mainstream)

Once again, to make sure we're clear, I'm not RR. I have given you nineteen names I can go by; that should be plenty.

EDIT: Added "Borussia Dortmund." Can't believe I forgot about this one.

"furbs" started with being the chat name I used as that was what some people called me because of my username before. People on chat use it after I put it up like that.

"furball" so much more elegant. Also matches my avatar!

What about furby ?

And since I got into the thread...

Zso -- most obvious and often used shortening
ZZ -- advocated by bripod originally in War5 team-chat, short and quick to type, I'm totally fine with it too (its my IRL initials BTW)

I guess you were the last one in the pupils list at school, either ordered by name or surname. Unless there are many common names starting with Z in your Canada

Thats the nick I used since videogames became online. It is a word play around 3 things. Animal cause I dive head on to the game, Anna Malle a porn star from the late 90s and a nickname that sounded feminine to confuse even worse.

Many people picked up on the animal and I think higs was the first in this community. Almost everyone that got to know me better asked the question about male/female and noone made the conection to the actress...making me feel OLD

On the way people called me many things but the one that kinda sticked and I grew to like was Maul. It started in war 4 when mithcairion came in team chat a few days after auction ended and saw a massive imput on the spreadsheet he was working for months. Somehow it spread outside the chat and reached the ears of jenkar...Took me a while to get used to it, but now I find it very entertaining cause it adds another level to the original nick.

Despite all these you can call me whatever is easier for your keyboard fingers  :P

My name is the phrase "the elk speaks", which came to me about two years ago from previous usernames, and therefore good shortenings of it are "elk", "the elk", "speaks", and pretty much whatever indicates you actually know what the phrase is!

By which I mean, feel free to use or make puns on those words, but things like "theel" generally aren't my name.

And also just to clear it up, I'm a guy - a couple people haven't been sure and have asked which pronouns to use, so just figured I'd clear it up.

EDIT: things like elky (yes, looking at you, rob) are also perfectly fine, as it's derived from elk.

Post by: Leodip on April 02, 2014, 06:40:03 pm
Leodip as in Leo and Dip, both are the first three letters of name and surname. I use that pretty much anywhere, but where I need a double account or stuff like that it's generally Anime stuff ("Konata:3" is one of my favourite, although some days ago I saw another player on YGOPro using it, dang it).
Mostly called Leo, have seen Leod, someone with broken keyboards call me Leodi, Leodp, Ledip, Lodip, or stuff like that, although the "L" is always there. My female classmates call me "Dipi" (you might understand it better as Dipy, it's basically the same, although "Dipi" is the first four letters of my surname, which also happens to sound cute), some of my male classmates call me "dpl" which I won't bother explaining since it uses dialect and stuff, but, still, it's the first 3 consonsants of my surname.
Leo is how I'm mostly being called IRL, some do call me via my nickname, but they generally don't bother considering how similar they are.

TL;DR, name and surname shortened.

My forum name tends to be what I use in most gaming areas (although I occasionally go by "OrionVanguard" in more sci-fi like settings)

I tend to see my nickname get shortened to just "Odin" around the forums... Doesn't bother me too much as long as no one else comes along with another screen name that gets shortened to "Odin" as well... that would just be confusing  :-\

I do find it rather ironic that I tend to hang around the CI&A card creation board most of the time and "Odin" is the Norse god also known as "The All Father" and is associated with creation and wisdom... I put "Vanguard" in front because that seemed a little pretentious. Lol.
But, hey, maybe it'll push me to try to live up to the namesake.

Oh, I wouldn't have any problem with either. All I meant to say is that nobody used any shortening so far.

Monox D. I-Fly. I always use this name in any places in the internet ever since I had my first e-mail address.

Monox was my nickname when I was a 10th grader, because at the time there was a contestant in my country's comedian contest TV show. That comedian called himself Monox, and my friends thought I was funny just like him.

D. as middle name came from One Piece. Fellow One Piece readers must know what I mean by that.

I-Fly, is short of my full name: Faizal Yunus Ibrahim -> Ibrahim, Faizal Yunus.
