It never asks you to select your weapon before animating it. If you don't have a weapon in the weapon slot and you play animated weapon, the card goes away. This is in contrast to a card like Parallel Universe, which requires you to target a card in order to twin it. If you play Parallel Universe with nothing available to twin, you can hit "cancel" and you get your card back. I guess this is the difference to me.

It's not targeting the card itself, but the weapon slot.

At least that's how I rationalize it :)

Based on established precedent of targeted and non-targeted abilities not directly affecting immaterial objects, immaterial weapons should not be able to be animated into creatures, since that is an action taken directly to the immaterial card.

Well based on that logic, area effect spells rain of fire, plague...should be able to hit immaterials.

There is one thing OP (and others) didn't take into consideration.

Morning Glory is NOT immaterial.

Read the description. "Cannot be destroyed or stolen". It says nothing about being immaterial or not being able to target it. Morning Glory only becomes immaterial when you use Flying Weapon. Until that it's more like "Unbreakable" or something.
