In my opinion this is a fantastic Idea.
In my experience with with MTG, aesthetics plays a large part in what people will play in their decks. They will buy older versions of any reprinted card if the art appeals to them more, and use nothing but holographic or full art land.
I disagree with using electrum to get an alternative artwork card though. I think if this would ever be considered that Zanz should try to make some sort of profit out of it, like 1.00$ per card.
