Title: The Ultimate Elements Music Topic
Post by: Scaredgirl on March 08, 2011, 04:28:32 am
The Ultimate Elements
Music Topic

They say in Hollywood that 50% of a movie is sound. I don't know what the numbers are when talking about online games, but I don't think that anyone disagrees when I say that music and sound effects are important part of a game.

This topic has several goals.

1. Find out what kind of music community members would like to hear in Elements
2. Find out during which parts community members think music should be played in Elements
3. Find or produce royalty-free music that can be used in Elements.
4. Using a poll, determine the most popular songs submitted.
Elements currently has only two tracks of music: intro music and False God music. This lack of different music is most likely at least partly because audio files can be large and increase loading times. However when looping shorter audio clips, files can be brought down to more manageable sizes, which should in theory enable us to have more unique audio clips inside Elements. And there is also the possibility of not having more audio clips, but having different audio clips to get more variation.

I know there are many talented people on this community. I think that it's time for us to step up and help Elements developers by finding or producing great music that can maybe one day added to the game. Current intro music was produced by out Global Moderator jmizzle7 (using the old guitar intro as a base), so there already is a history of Elements developers using community created music.

It is important to realize that there are absolutely no guarantees that your music will be used in Elements, nor are there even guarantees that Elements will have new music. All that is up to the developers. On this topic we merely give the developers options to choose from.

I would also like to add that polls on this topic should not be taken as the community making decisions for the developers. They are only suggestions and feedback.

If you want to submit songs, please use the short tutorial below. Post the "embed" code of your song on this topic, and I will add them to the list. Remember, songs you post must be 100% royalty-free for commercial use in Elements. This means that either the song was produced by yourself and you grant Elements developers the right to use it, or it was taken from a website that allows royalty-free commercial use.

If your song gets added to the game, you will naturally be credited for it.

This is just a start. Polls, plus tons of other stuff, will be added to this post later.

Upload Songs Using   (http://kiwi6.com/img/kiwi6-logo-64.png)

What is Kiwi6?
Kiwi6 allows you to upload your mp3-files online for free. You will receive a link to your mp3-file, or you can embed the file directly on a website or a forum.

The advantage of Kiwi6 over similar services like YouTube is that Kiwi6 does not require registration, and uploading is very fast. It takes less than a minute to upload one song and receive the link. Simple, fast and free.

List of Royalty-Free Songs
This is where we list all the songs found during this project. I started off by adding some songs, all of which can be used in Elements for free, as long as the artist is credited. Warning: Most of these probably wouldn't fit to Elements at all.

Partners In Rhyme (http://www.partnersinrhyme.com) is a good site for royalty-free music/loops/sound effects. Not sure if this is much help or what you were looking for, but it's something.

I am currently making a jingle for the bazaar.  It will be semi-smooth jazz, featuring minor/major 6ths.

i have a suggestion rather than a website to give or music. i suggest that, when a player plays a game, a song plays according to his mark (a fire mark would make a fast going tempo and catchy beat while life would be something more tribal, sounds of drums and animal cries and howls.) its a suggestion really. im giving out ideas

Thanks. We can use some of the songs on that website, but not all of it. They are using the same trick that most audio sites use, which is offering only royalty-free material, not free.

To anyone who didn't know, royalty-free means you can use the material without having to pay royalties for the holder of copyright. But that's different than "regular free", because you usually still have to pay for being able to use it.

We need material that is..

A) Free of charge (no need to buy)
B) Royalty-free

Most of the songs on Partners In Rhyme (http://www.partnersinrhyme.com) is only B, but some of the songs and loops are A + B.

I'll take a look at them. Thanks.

By the way.. if I do find something, I cannot list them here because they forbid me to do this:

Ok, cool.

One option I was thinking was to have Bazaar have some kind of Persian music, since that's where Bazaars originated from, and it's also used as a "Bazaar background music". For example if you listen to that Ibn Al-Noor track above, it has that Bazaar feeling I think. Well, either that or a Harem. :)

I like the concept of changing music based on players mark. But wouldn't it get boring really fast if you always use the same mark? I mean you would have to listen to that same song over and over again.

What if there was music based on your mark, but it only played when you are in the "Your Deck" window? This way it wouldn't be too spammy, and it would also have the added benefit of reminding you what mark you have, so you don't go out fighting with the wrong one.

I see what u mean. yes redundancy is redundant. maybe have like 2 or three songs for each elements (if even possible) or have a selection of songs somewhere so the player chooses what song plays in what menu (again, if even possible)...kinda like a presetted jukebox that can be modded in main menu. just saying. don't want to impose

That is one option yes. But then again if we give the players control by giving them a jukebox, it raises the question why not just go mute and let them listen to their own music? :)

One could argue that music in game is like music in a movie: it's designed to be part of the whole experience. I don't know.. We can include this in the poll.

Awesome, thanks. I'll add it to the first post when I add some of the competition loops we will be getting shortly.

This topic got buried, was a bit hard to find.

-- I want to offer the track made for the Elder Music Competition, though I don't know if I should upload it to kiwi or not, all of the submissions were deleted there in a few days, but it can be done if neccesary of course.

I'd love Elements having more melodies in it, like, the Bazaar with a persian/arabic theme, different gods with a different impressions, or even a background loop for your deck section (the place you spend your time the most ). Probably it's not one of the prior things to do for Zanz - if it ever crossed his mind -, but music plays an (extremely) important role in every gender of entertainment, be it a huge movie or a computer game - And today's people can only be satisfied fully enough, if most - if not all - of their senses are well fed, sadly though.. But I can't really judge how important is this in the case of an OCCG.

would it take up too much memory to have a unique tune for each fake god? as much as i like the current, universal piece i think it would really add to the game and make monotonous, repetitive FG grinding just a little bit more fun.

i second this statement, it would be a nice addition...but a LOT of work to make the songs if we can't get royalty free music loops

we really need some musicians in our forums to step up and give us something good. it would save us time and money and provide this forum with a real sense of teamwork and practicality. not to mention some very unique pieces. besides not all music found on these sites are perfect for elements whereas specially made tunes and jingles are.

wel...i know of one way to make music for free, but you need... LINUX Ubuntu. the program is called Lmms. it comes with a variety of sounds to mix and stuff. i've used it a few times and i like it a bit. maybe someone could get deeper with this (inception!)

hmm that could trigger off some good ideas. what's that program called on the mac where you can mix your own sounds and create songs? anyway that could be VERY useful.

That would be GarageBand. It has the standard stuff that one would need to create loops.

and does it get any more advanced than standard? or is it just basic.

I have heard of people producing albums using GarageBand, so yes, you can get advanced with it by tweaking the parameters of each oscillator/effect/plugin that GarageBand has to offer. Logic, however, is the "pro" version of GarageBand, with the same interface and much more controls and features. Of course, it costs much more than GarageBand.

I have some projects on the docket right now and on the horizon. The false god music I have been working on has been nearing completion for quite some time now; I have just been slammed with school, work, and some wacky health issues. I might do a "music class" of sorts some time later also, if there is a need/demand for such a thing.

I lurked and I lurked, and then I read this thread...

SIGN ME UP!

It would be a dream come true to compose for Elements.

By the way, although the MacLeods are wonderful and free, every single flash game and iPhone app on the planet uses them. I would strongly suggest avoiding them, especially when we have such valiant community members.

I liked the existing opening theme =D (or what little there is of it =9)

Also - consider contacting the Wesnoth community (I don't want to be promoting another game here, so please Google on your own if interested =) ). They have awesome, awesome music, and everything is copylefted (you would still want to ask first though; I am pretty sure Wesnoth is 100% copylefted, but the other game started by the Wesnoth guys is open-source with proprietary graphics and sound)

I also have a feeling quite a number of Wesnoth players may be interested in Elements ^.~
